Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

A couple of questions and comments

I was reading Buster Olney's blog on ESPN.com and it got me thinking in light of the Soriano contract what would a player like Miguel Cabrera get on the free agent market?  Secondly, players that have really affordable contracts such as Carl Crawford can the Rays ask for more in return if they were to trade him because of such an economical contract or does contract value have little to do with how much a player is worth? Finally, the Blue Jays got four supplemental picks two for Justin Spier and two for Frank Catalanatto.  Seems kinda crazy that Cat was considered a type A free agent but, I think that was a pretty good deal for the Jays.

Have good Thanksgiving everyone.

  1. I play in some big Strat-O-Matic leagues with somewhat realistic salary structures.  My experience over the years is that most managers will strongly consider salary size when evaluating trades.  The only time they don't is when they (think that they) need one specific piece, and hence don't worry that the player involved has an expensive contract.
  2. Agreed on the Catalanotto bounty.  Downright ugly signing by Texas, and I'm actually more of a fan of the "line drive" sort of offense that Catalanotto brings than most people are... just not in Texas, and just not at that price (salary and picks).  I guess if Texas signs 3 "A" free agents, the actual pickage cost for Catalanotto will go down to a 3 or 4.
  3. Ditto for Speier.  Sorry, but I don't understand the thinking that makes non-closers worth that sort of money and picks.  I didn't understand it last year when the Cubs paid for Eyre and Howry, and I don't understand it now.  That said, the lack of a relief corps (aside from Mo) has haunted the Yankees for years, so you need to be able to find effective pitchers somewhere.  But I'm still of the mind that you do like the White Sox - pick up Thornton for free pre-season, swap a prospect for MacDougal mid-season, etc., as needed.

Definitely
The salary of a player makes a huge difference in their value.  That's why Bobby Abreu (and his big salary) were only worth lower level prospects.  Had he been cheap, or had the Phillies been willing to pay some of his contract, they could have gotten Tabata or Hughes.
