David Wright: American Hero

i've always thought so, just figured more people would agree with me now...for those who don't know, he hit a game-tying HR with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th in the first game of the japan series today...the game ended in a tie...now lets see those brainiacs over at the WBC try to bring chipper again...

LOL
I'm a mets fan too, lets hope you don't attacked to hard. And although DWright was pretty terrible in the NLCS, he did hit that double to put guys in scoring position before valentin was K'd like Beltran. I thought that pitch to Beltran was obvious because of the Valentin AB, but what do i know.

by Metty5 on Nov 2, 2006 3:27 PM EST   0 recs

Actually...
He reached on an error by Rolen (not a double) before the Valentin K, but who's counting... why not give him more credit than he deserves :)

We
Are talking about two differnt games, he doubled down the left field line.

by Metty5 on Nov 2, 2006 5:24 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Which game?
I'm talking about Game 7, which would seem to be what you are talking about because that's the game Valentin had the big K, the same game Beltran K'd. Wright reached on an error just before the Valentin K.

What game are you talking about?

The Japan series is meaningless
Yeah it was Chippers fault team usa lost lol. Wright stunk in the playoffs and in the 2nd half. As good as he is he gets too much credit. He isnt the best player on the mets yet everyone talks about him. He wont be Chipper Jones either IMO.

by bravitos5122 on Nov 2, 2006 4:02 PM EST   0 recs

well
i'm not saying hes the reason we lost...my point is that we're supposed to send our best third baseman and not only is david wright THOUSANDS of miles ahead of chipper already, chipper is barely the best third baseman on the left side of his own damn infield (and i dont even think that highly of willy aybar)

by robcast23 on Nov 2, 2006 6:05 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

and
theres a difference between not hitting for power and "stinking"...going by that definition, chippers been stinking it up for years

and while i can't back it up i will go on record as saying that wright is going to blow chippers career out of the damn water

ps - chipper didn't even deserve that mvp, he stole it from mike piazza

by robcast23 on Nov 2, 2006 6:11 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Piazza's MVP?
Admittedly, Piazza stole it from himself by crapping out that September.

by Lunkwill Fook on Nov 2, 2006 6:17 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

hold on
chipper has had a hell of a career.  i like wright as much as the next guy, but in order to blow chipper's career out of the water he would need to approach mike schmidt territory.

also, i respectfully disagree that chippper didn't deserve his mvp.  but even if he didn't it was a great year.  injuries messed him up a bit in his 30s, but he was great.

to be honest, i never really LIKED jones.  but to say wright will blow his career away is premature.  if he could simply match it then mets fans would have a stud for years to come.

Chipper.
So Chipper isnt even the best player on the left side of his infield? Chipper had a 1.005 OPS this year, Wright was only at .912 OPS. Who is better than that on the left side of the braves infield? Renteria and his .800 OPS? Chipper missed his first year due to and ACL tear, otherwise there wouldnt have been that much of a diffrence in the start of their careers. Chipper actually wont a WS his first year, Wright has a lot to do to get on the same level as Chipper.

Sure is nice that your giving Wright the credit when it was Andruw who hit 2 homers just so Wright got the chance to hit the tying homer.

And just for your refrence here are the stats from 99.

Piazza .303/.361/.575 - .936 OPS with 2 steals

Chipper .319/.441/.633 - 1.074 with 25 steals and only 3 caught stealing.

Add on to that that Chipper was clutch when it counted and Piazza's team got dominated by the braves in spetember. Piazza was barely with .150 OPS of Chipper.

Heck, McCann put up a higher OPS this year than Piazza did that year.

Chipper vs Wright
Now, no one is comparing current Chipper to current Wright.  Chipper is a veteran, Hall of Fame time player at the end of his prime.  Wright is a 23 year old at the end of his second season.

But, progressively, you have to admit that Wright is on pace to be possibly as good as Chipper if not better although, of course, that all depends on how careers go.

And, yes, Chipper tore his ACL or he would have debuted a year early.... but he also might have hit like a player who was in the bigs a year too early, you never know.  Unfortunately, you can't count Chipper's early injury against Wright.  You can only credit Wright for staying healthy.

And good for Chipper to win a WS his first season.  Must be nice to debut for a team that has won its division four straight years as opposed to coming up to a team that hadn't won in 2 or 3 years.

Actually....
Stat wise, Wright is on pace to be better then Jones.  Of course, it remains to be seen if Wright can make the 25-30 homer plateau jump to 35-40 homers like Chipper did but, at this point, you have to assume it's likely.

Also, David Wright's "horrible" post allstar break stats were .305/.375/.469.  I wish I were that horrible all the time.

HoF
Let's just skip the waiting period and put him in.

Heck, maybe there's room on Mt. Rushmore?

I've loved him
Forever <3
In the name of David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Lastings Milledge. Amen.

The 3B era
I am a DWright owner in my sim league.  He's got it all, but there are quite a few high quality young 3B around these days.  Depending on position switches, we could be heading into a new golden age.

I'll just throw some younger names out there, and will deliberately not take position changes into account.  I think you can start with Wright, Cabrera, Zimmerman, Atkins, Encarnacion and Tracy.

There are guys on the cusp (IMO) who could still go either way like Blalock, Crede, Marte, Betemit.  The prospects look pretty strong as well.  Guys like J. Fields, I. Stewart, Longoria, and maybe even BJ Upton.

I almost forgot whoever ends up at 3B for KC as well.  Thats a pretty nice group.

just a quick opinion.  :)

Fantasy 3rd baseman
I agree.  When I was getting my fantasy draft ready earlier this year, I suddenly realized the glut of quality 3rd basemen in the league right now.  Plus, considering how young the majority of them are right now.... Some are better than others but Wright, Zimmerman, Atkins, Tracy, and others already have HoF type talent.  If even four of them pan out, that's a huge crop of elite 3rd basemen.

David Wright has man boobs
There, I said it.

He's still good though.

Floyd...
Even though he had a tough 2006, I still felt a lot more comfortable with Floyd protecting Wright in the lineup than Sean Green. At least Floyd is a power threat, whereas Green was mostly a slap hitter in the NLCS (1 2B, 6 1B). The Cards did a good job of making Wright swing at their pitches, knowing that Green was obviously the less dangerous hitter...

And as good as Endy Chavez was all year, he reverted back to his swing for the fences approach in the playoffs as well. Glass Floyd was smoking the ball before he came up limp in LA, and it's not surprising that Wright had three times as many RBI's (6 to 2) in the NLDS as he did in the NLCS with a productive hitter behind him. Given the way the patchwork pitching staff stepped up, you could make a good case that Floyd's injury was the most damaging of all...

Oh yeah, and I love David Wright as much as the next guy, but he still has five more continents to HR on before we can call him God!

Wright...
... will be fine (I hope). I think his problem was fatigue + out-of-whack approach in the second half. Some simple adjustments, a return to going to the opposite field, and a winter's worth of rest and hopefully he will be fine.
