Matsuzaka? pfffffff

The Cubs signed Mark DeRosa to a 3 year deal.  Yeah baby!

The problems with the Cubs weren't the starting pitching, what were us Cubs fans thinking? no no no, what we needed was another platoon player signed to a 3 year deal.  Now we have Jones for 2 more years who can't hit lefties and Derosa for 3 who can't hit righties.

Hendry's big plan for ending the 100 years of misery is clear now.  Have completely different lineups vs. righties and lefties.  Wait, you are allowed a 40 man roster right?

The only exciting part of the upcoming season will be to watch Sweet Lou blow his stack as the Cubs lose 90 games again.

To be fair
A Jacque Jones/Mark DeRosa platoon would be pretty awesome in RF.

Hendry...
is an amazing man.

In one week he managed to sign ARam to a great deal, and sign Wood for cheap to be a reliever. Both great deals. Then he blows it by paying a pretty meh player with a .348 BABIP in his career year a decent contract.

Not only that but I'm willing to bet he wants Derosa to start at 2B.

Well this better lead to a Drew signing, or something worth talking about.

Theriot
I thought Ryan Theriot looked like a nice little player the little I saw of him.  The way he puts the ball in play, gets on base at a decent rate, and has decent speed could have made him a nice option as a #2 hitter (or leadoff depending on what happens with Pierre).  I was interested to see what he could do if he could get a full time job, but I suppose any chance of that happening just  decreased dramatically.

Re: Theriot
He's had full time jobs in the minors and never slugged .400. I think it would have been a mistake to pencil him in as the starting 2B in 2007. Seems to me he fits in on the bench and as injury insurance.

SLG%
Shh. Don't tell that to Cesar Izturis.  He's going to be the starting SS, right?  Izturis has a better glove than Theriot, but Theriot is a better offensive player.

But I do agree that Theriot shouldn't have been penciled in as the starter.  I think he should have had an opportunity to earn it.  Maybe he still will, because I'm one of the many that is not convinced that last year's DeRosa is anything more than a career year.  DeRosa is making some money, so he has to be the heavy favorite.

Is Juan Pierre (haha, another one of those low SLG guys) going to be back ?  If not, who's going to leadoff?

Pie
Is Felix Pie going to get a shot to start in center for the Cubs?  Why are they trying to find a CF in free agency?

Pie needs
another full season in AAA.  At least.

I doubt it
His OPS was close to 1.000 in the second half.  He probably won't make the team out of S/T, and he's historically a slow starter at a new level anyway, but I could see him with the team midseason if there's an injury or an ineffective player.

What he needs
and what he gets are 2 different things.  Unless he goes apeshit or there is an injury, he shouldn't be up until September.

Pie is...
so unrefined.

The guy needs to get some plate discipline, and learn to steal some bases.

His game just needs alot of refinement. I'm actually hoping the Cubs package him for a nice yonug arm.

I suppose
what's the difference.  They can't develop position players and they just ruin pitchers.

Oh, I don't know
DeRosa's not a bad player.  Not saying he's worth $4M/year or that the Cubs don't have bigger problems, but if I were a Cubs fan I'd be pleased with DeRo at 2B for them next year.

His splits are getting better and personally, I do think the gains are real.  DeRosa worked all year with Rudy J and Mike young, and you can see it in his approach.  He's a guy who never really got a full shot until this year, and he made the most of it.

Ya know it's bad when...
they put this as the player news heading on CBS...

Cubs sign DeRosa to be, uh, 2B

Good stuff.  Wonder if he got something brewing for unloading Cedeno or Izturis.  That's the only reason I can see him doing that.  If that's not the case... ugh.
