Adam Wainwright

I was talking to my Cardinal fan buddy about what StL could give up for A-Rod. Since Rolen would fill the 3rd base opening nicely and NY would obviously want young pitching along with him I said Rolen, Wainwright and what else?

Well, he stopped me there because he wouldn't trade Wainwright straight up for A-Rod. So instead of arguing this and not convincing him otherwise, I thought I'd throw it to you guys who know a lot about Wainwright's value.

Does Wainwright have so much potential that Jocketty would deem him untouchable if they could get Rodriguez in the deal? Would he not be worth A-Rod straight up?

(And yes, I know the answer to this, just wanted other opinions)

if STL has to pay A-Rod's salary
then NO A-Rod is not worth Wainwright and Rolen...

Basically, when talking about an A-Rod deal...the most important thing is A-Rod's salary.  There are teams in the majors who would not take A-Rod in a trade where they didn't give anything up, because they do not want to pay his salary.  In other words, if those teams wanted A-Rod at $25 million per year, they would have outbid the Rangers for him when he was a FA.  In terms of who is going to give you more for what they cost...I could see a case being made for Wainwright.  He looked pretty good and will be cheap for the next five years.  I think A-Rod for Wainwright straight up with no money exchange is about right...

Of course most people will get on here and say that A-Rod is worth way more than Wainwright and that you'd have to give up 2-3 cheap young good players to get him, but I disagree.  At a cheap  salary, A-Rod is worth 4-5 good young talented players...but considering that A-Rod will cost 25+ times more than a player who is in their pre-arb years, teams will not give up a lot to get him - unless of course the Yanks eat some of his contract.

Not $25M
I believe the Rangers are throwing in $9M a year, so A-Rod is a relative bargain at $16M.

you're right
i forgot all about that...i withdraw most of my comment...

Again Relative...
But I suspect that Rolen is making something in the neighborhood of $10-12M.

And remember, A-Rod can play SS when a better SS is not present - Eck, I'm looking at you.

yeah
considering that the Rangers are paying so much of A-Rod's salary...he wouldn't be THAT much more costly than Rolen

Rolen
Was gonna say. The Cardinals would be paying 3-4M a yr more then what they are paying now for Rolen.

Forget Rolen
Let's forget Rolen. The arguement is Wainwright for Rodriguez straight up with Arod making 16 million. Who wouldn't do that for StL?

Ridiculous
Wainwright and Rolen for Arod? Is that some sort of a joke?

So
Which part is the joke?

Is Wainwright really that valuable?
Salary considerations aside, just how valuable is Wainwright?  At this point, isn't he just a young pitcher, with one solid year as a setup man?

I expect him to continue to perform well in that role, but I'm not so sure he will become a quality closer, and I'm less sure he could go back to starting and excel in that role.

wow
No way wouuld the yankees do that. Lets take off the homer-goggles. Wainwright is good, but not a great young pitcher. He did well in the pen, but can he start? In a starting role his walks go up and his K's go down. Considering his historic numbers he'll be a solid #3-4 type of guy.

NO WAY this is enough to get arod.

Think
A-Rod and Pujols hitting back to back while paying slightly more until Edmonds comes off the books for the best 1-2 punch this side of Manny-Ortiz. I'd take that over Wainwright's potential in a heartbeat.

Not that the Yanks would do it.

Hmmm on that note
Randy Moss' best high school sport was baseball.  A-Rod was a quarterback.  I see a potential match here, haha.

forgetting one probelm
Is rolen even healthy... the guy cant even play because of recurring pain from his surgically repaired knees... hes older than arod no?  i dont think NY would ever do that..  I certainly would not.. No disrepsect to waingwright, hes a good young pitcher.

re: rolen
his knees are fine, it is his shoulder that is shot.  cintron jacked it up running into him in the playoffs a few years ago then he ran into choi last year and screwed it up more.  i doubt his power ever comes back.

A-ROD
he is probably the best player since Ruth. I read this elsewhere and I will relay it here. If someone offers you a yacht you take it. You may not know where to put it or what to do with it, but if it can be yours you have to get it.

I was thinking of the same kind of situation for the stros. Besides Ensberg and Lidge, what else do you have to give to get Alex?

I put the question out. I would give Ensberg, Lidge, Barthmaier, and Reineke for A-ROD. WHo is willing to give more than that? Also, Is that a deal the Yanks make?
