MiLB Draft Redux

I posted  the 1st round results of a MiLB draft in which I'm participating. The draft is now into the 2nd round and I've another pick coming up. The selections to date are:

Round 1
1 Delmon Young, OF
2 Jeremy Hermida, OF
3 Ian Stewart, 3B
4 Hanley Ramirez, SS
5 Andy LaRoche, 3B
6 Francisco Liriano, SP
7 Prince Fielder, 1B
8 Matt Cain, SP
9 Ryan Zimmerman, 3B
10 Carlos Quentin, OF * mine
11 Brandon Wood, SS
12 Conor Jackson, 1B
13 Alex Gordon, 3B * mine
14 Lastings Milledge, OF
15 Bobby Jenks, RP
16 Anthony Reyes, SP
17 Howie Kendrick, 2B
18 Jonathan Papelbon, SP
19 Stephen Drew, SS
20 team failed to select

Round 2
21 team failed to select
22 Eric Duncan, 1b
23 Scott Olsen, SP
24 Justin Verlander, SP
25 Brian Anderson, OF
26 Andy Marte, 3b
27 Chad Billingsley, P
28 Jered Weaver, P
29 Billy Butler, OF
30
31 ** mine

My ranking for the best players remaining, taking into consideration the probability of their playing in 2006, are:

  1. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
  2. Nick Markakis, OF
  3. Daric Barton, 1B
  4. Jarrod Saltalamaccia, C
  5. Joel Guzman, SS/1B (?)
  6. Dustin Pedroia, SS
I've deliberately excluded any SP or Rp although there are several outstanding ones available. I hope/expect to get one of the latter in a later round.

Is my ranking out of whack? I only ranked Gonzalez so highly because it appears that he'll have significant playing time at 1B in San Diego. Correct or valid assumption?

Your thoughts and comments were very helpful earlier and greatly appreciated.

Not sure about Adrian
He still will platoon at 1b even if he wins the job as he cannot yet hit mlb lefties. I think the Pads stick Klesko at first, though.  AD got some PT in right field in the Mexican Winter league and that may help him get a few more ab's if he can man that position.

Gonzo
I probably wouldn't consider drafting him this early.

Justin Upton has signed and I am pretty shocked no one has drafted him yet. He would immediately move to the top of my draft list.

I am not convinced that Daric Barton will be a big-time fantasy 1b, until he develops more power.

From your current list, I would probably take Guzman or Salty...

Upton
is not eligible for our draft. Had not signed with his team prior to the start of the draft. We're maikng him a free agent and I expect the bidding to be fierce.

Thanks for the comment, I ws leary about selecting Gonzalez and would prefer either Guzman or salty or markakis. A significant consideration is whether they can get MLB playing time in 2006. Salty won't I know and the others may be questionable although Markakis would appear to have a good chance.

My other option is to draft a MLB ready RP like Hansen, Cabrera or Broxton.

2006
Why is 2006 SO significant?

"A significant consideration is whether they can get MLB playing time in 2006."

I would rather eat a cowpie than take Adrian Gonzalez over the Salty Dog. Atleast once I ate it it would be over with. You'd have to see Salty (and Barton for that matter) raking for years while you have A-Gonz.

Jenks
Jenks went that early in my draft as well.  I just don't understand that.  The guy isn't even guaranteed to close next year, and has a history of personal issues.  He doesn't seem likely to follow  a Hoffman type career path.  Can someone explain to me what I'm missing here.
I realize that people want immediate returns, but with so many great hitting prospects still on the board, I don't get it.

Really???
I personally haven't heard that Jenks is being replaced, and until the White Sox say differently, why wouldn't the Closer on the World Series Champs be at least as valuable as a hitting prospect?  In any league.

I imagine he's available...
...I'd take Chris Young before any of those guys.  I'd also say drafting Gonzalez over any of the other 5 guys you have listed (other than maybe Guzman) is probably a mistake, even if you're looking for early returns.   Heck, if you're just looking for a rookie who qualifies at 1B who will put up good fantasy stats, I'd take Ryan Shealy before GOnzalez...

young
chris young is a good call, he should be in the mix at this point.  i wouldn't take gonzalez.  if you want a faster return i'd take pedroia over him.  otherwise i'd be looking at young and the rest of your list (still including pedroia).

HAHA
Who took Duncan over Verlander, Marte, Billingsley, Guzman, Salty and more? Dang

by nms on Jan 9, 2006 1:16 AM EST reply actions

I thought the same thing
That's the thing about these deep, long-projected leagues.  One or two of those teams is going to have an uninformed manager, and then, when that team starts tanking, and the manager quits, no one else is going to want to take it over.

I don't know the point system ...
but for various reasons, I'd consider:

Russell Martin - not the upside of Salty, but has mastered AA ball.

Felix Pie - should be a good "fantasy" player.

Pedroia - won't be as good at "fantasy" as in real life, but should still be plenty good.

Troy Tulowitzki - Maybe a reach, but "hitter" and "Colorado" go together well.

Ryan Shealy - ditto, although obviously he has a PT issue, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him moved.

Adam Jones and Marcus Sanders - if this is a roto-style league, these guys are fast, and can get on base.

Personally, I'd put Barton atop the heap now, even if he isn't likely to play MLB in 2006.
