Minor Selection Coming Up

I'm in a minor draft at the moment and we are in the first round. I draft #10 and #13 (obtained via trade). The Draft Selections so far are:

  1. Delmon Young
  2. Jeremy Hermida
  3. Ian Stewart
  4. Hanley Ramirez
  5. Andy Laroche
  6. Francisco Liriano
  7. Prince Fielder
  8. Matt Cain
  9. Ryan Zimmerman
  10. Carlos Quentin (mine)
As I said I pick again at #13 and so I should be able to get one of the following prospects:
  1. Gordon
  2. Drew
  3. Wood <- my #1 - probably 3B for ANA by mid 06
Any one would be acceptable to me although Gordon or Wood would be preferable because of the likelihood of playing 3B - have I missed a preferred prospect? I know Butler is also available.

Closest to a sure thing left

Gordon
I'd take Gordon mostly b/c I think that Stephen Drew is just as much an injury-risk as JD.  He's got tremendous talent, but until Stephen's in a contract year, I won't trust him.

I'd take...
Drew.  Shortstops with that kind of fantasy ability don't grow on trees.  There are several other good 3B prospects I'm sure you could grab in the next round (DeWitt, Moses, Moore, Cambell, Pope...to name a few).

Having said that, Gordon is an excellent pick and there are several good SS you could pick up as well.  Is this a roto league?  That would make a difference to me.  If so, I'd definitely take Drew first since he'll add SB and Runs over Gordon, while Gordon might only trump in HR.

It is
a standard Roto league (20 teams) - 6v6 with OPS and Holds the extra categories. A complicating issue is that i already have Crosby selected as a SS and while Gordon may not "arrive" until mid 2006he probably would make a more immediate impact thatn Drew. Having said that i've already had expressions of trade interest about crosby so I might be able to swing a vg deal if Drew is the left.

i don't think you can go wrong with those three.
the others are handing this to you.  hanley and laroche over drew, gordon and wood?  that's... interesting.

i actually would have taken two of those three over quentin, but it's your team. i can see how doing that would cause a bit of a positional pile-up.

i'm also the butler partisan, of course, but i understand why a lot of people don't share that.

Actually
When the time came for my #10 pick i knew I could get 2 of Quentin, Drew, Gordon and Wood. Quentin was the only OF so I choose him. The fact that he is probably the most likely to earn regular playing time in 2006 also was a major consideration. Doing so guaranteed that I would get 1 of Wood, Drew or Gordon. I'm hoping that Butler will still be around for a later pick but it's not likely he'll fall as far as #30 (my next).

Like you I was astonished (delighted also) that Wood, Drew and Gordon were not selected earlier.

Some interesting players are falling
Chief among them is Lastings Milledge.  If you are looking for impact sooner rather than later, San Diego Padres prospect Cesar Carrillo should be there at #30 (and possibly later)

Thanks
Milledge went with #15 I believe but thanks for reminding me of Carillo. I was planning to take a SP somewhere along the line and one that would likely see action in 2006 would be preferred

Perhaps
He must be signed by his MLB club to be available for our draft. His "arrival" time is apparently 2008 or, more likely, 2009 which is a little late for my purposes. However, I would undoubtably use a later pick to get him - if only for trade value.

B.J., not Justin
I'd be willing to wager that B.J. Upton opens the season as Tampa Bay's starting shortstop, since I firmly believe they are going to deal Lugo.

BJ
Not eligible - too much MLB playing time.

This may be a dumb question, but ...
What happened to Andy Marte?  He has roughly the same amount of MLB experience as Zimmerman.  I haven't seen his name even mentioned. I like Barton and Markakis among players not named yet.

I'm amazed
at his being ignored so far also. Pick #18 is on the board and Marte hasn't been picked yet. It is possible that people are leary of him - perhaps because Atlanta traded him away. I would note that he did not exactly impress in his short stint with the Braves in 2005 whereas both Mccann and Francoeur did. I do expect him to go shortly though - love to see him still there for my next pick (#30) but that's not likely.

Wood!
If it's between Gordon,Drew, and Wood. It would be Wood. No question about it. Wood has no defensive issues at shortstop and until he is moved, which hasn't happened yet,he is the front-runner. Drew isn't necessarily a sure thing both defensively or offensively. And although I like Gordon he plays 3B and the other two presently play shortstop.

Wood
was gone when I selected and it was between Gordon and Drew. I went with Gordon.

Keeper League Prospect Questions
am in a keeper league and have a big draft coming up on the 14th.  I have the 9th and 12th pick of the first round, and don't pick again until 45th.

I have a good starting core... Kendhal,Overbay, O.Hudson, Tejada, Mueller, Beltran, V.Wells and Gathright. I have Buehrle, B.Myers, Mulder, C. Silva and B. Wagner in the pen.

I am wondering who I should take a gamble on in the first two picks.  These are some names that are popping up on the free agent list:
Conor Jackson, Dan Johnson or Chris Shelton at First.
Ryan Zimmerman, Garret Atkins, Mark Teahan, Edwin Encarnacion or Wilson Betemit at Third.
Peralta, Hardy or Cedeno at SS.
Francour, Hermida, B. Anderson, Murton, Granderson at OF
M.Cain, K Davies, Anthony Reyes at P

What are your thoughts on Tim Stauffer, Fransisco Liriano or Ezequiel Astacio, are they worth picking or waiting?

Players like Duke, King Felix, Ervin Santana are avaliable, but I am hoping someone takes them in the top 5, if not I will.

by ChrisRef19 on Jan 7, 2006 8:54 AM EST reply actions

I would
definitly take Liriano, Peralta, Hermida and Cain before Duke/Ervin.

by williethekid20 on Jan 7, 2006 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

Peralta
Not sure if I need to draft Peralt with Tejeda in the hole, but he would be a good back up or future player.  I think I am leaning towards Hermida or Zimmerman in the first two picks with Peralta, Connor Jackson or any pitcher that is avaliable (cain,Davies,Reyes) at that time.  I think guys like Olsen, Melhom and Liriano will be free in later rounds since they are ranked very low in the league I am in (APBA Simulated computer game).
