Grading Ryan Shealy...
Since the poll question about Ryan Shealy's prospect grade got a ton of votes, i figured i would post a diary to discuss...
Shealy is an interesting case. Obviously, he is blocked by Todd Helton at 1b. He has shed about 15 lbs. since the the outfield. He did a nice job when Helton went down last year and he put up nice AAA numbers as well...
I am not sure if his knees will hold up for the shift to the outfield, but at least the Rockies realize that they have to get his bat in the lineup. I still think there is a good chance he is dealt. At any rate, I think he can hold his own as an above-average major leaguer with his bat in any park, but in Coors Field he has the potential to be a borderline star with regular PT (but will he get that PT with the Rockies in 2006?)
I voted that he would be a very solid B prospect (almost B+), and i really like his offensive potential. I am curious as to why everyone else voted the way they did...

B
I think he's either a First baseman or DH. Didn't the Rockies already try this with Jack Cust? I do think Shealy'a a better hitter than Cust.

B / B-
He's shown he can hit and that he deserves a shot to hit in the majors during an extended stay. His problems, though, are still the same ones he had last year though - age and position.
As a Colorado fan, I will be pleasantly surprised if he can play OF (emphasis on surprised). If he can't play OF, Shealy is a 1B/DH and there are only so many 1B/DH slots available in the major leagues, especially with younger, probably better, bats like Garko & Barton already coming along in other organizations.
John rates B prospects as having "a good chance to enjoy successful careers. Some will develop into stars and some will not." That B rating seems realistic, bordering on optimistic, for Shealy given the age & position shortcomings.
Trade him soon
I voted B+ he is a great hitter.
Distribution
But anyway, was anyone else impressed by the quasi-normal distribution around the 'B' grade in the poll results? It warms a statistician's heart...
