How much is B. Wood worth?

I don't usually like to ask for fantasy advice on this site, but this one has got me stumped.

I'm pondering a deal for B. Wood.

I'd give up Miguel Tejeda and Ben Hendrickson (Mil) for B. Wood, K. Wood and D. Veal.

This is a deep (28 teams) keeper league. I won't get into the money aspects of the deal but on talent alone I can't seem to pull the trigger on this one.

Is B. Wood really worth this much?

I say no
Wood (Kerry) is too much injury risk and Brandon may not stay at SS, to little for top 3 SS in the game

Wood
How good is Brandon Wood? Think a big, strong, powerful offensive threat who is an excellent shortstop. Remember that Brandon Wood was Arizona's 2003 High School Player of the Year. He also hit "the longest home run" that the official scorekeeper had ever seen at the Epicenter. He's a special talent to say the least. He a big shortstop, like Cal Ripken, but he's got more power. Probably only 1 year away.

seen him a lot
and am a big fan of Brandon's but your talkin about Miggy, i wouldnt do it.

I've heard otherwise
Wood is 6'2" 180 according to the baseball cube and I've heard others that have met him remark that he seems smaller than that.  That's not "big and strong" at all.  At least, not for a pro ballplayer.  A-rod is 6'3" 195.  Crosby is 6'3" 195.  Ripken was 6'4" 220.  Where are you getting your info?

by Tim J on Jan 20, 2006 7:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So...
Brandon Wood is only 20 years old.  He probably hasn't filled out yet.  So 6'3", 185 lbs, can easily become a 6'3", 210 lbs. SS, like Alex Rodriguez.  I am not say he will, I am just saying he is not done growing yet.

AROD=195 lbs? NO WAY
You can't go by weights listed on the thebaseballcube.com (TBC). I don't think they ever get updated. Your A-Rod example should make this clear to you. No way he's under two bills!! Just look at him. MLB.COM has him at 225.

I strongly recommend no one make assertations about a player's mass based on TBC's listed weight. It's not current factual data like the batting stats.

info
He's big for a shortstop and he's strong (.672 SLG) Can it get any more simple?

this picture is good

Hopefully, it works. It will show you a big shortstop.

talk to me when he has 2 seasons at 500+ SP
I will be much more convinced then.

And I don't count 19 AB at Salt Lake.

His Cal numbers are just too far out of line with his 2003/2004 numbers to take them without a huge grain of salt. Especially for someone with mediocre plate control. Other than the Cal League, he has a career 754 OPS, with league seasons ranging from 726 to 842 (in 19 AB). Hardly awe inspiring, even for a middle infielder.

by cdamon on Jan 20, 2006 8:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure
That's a good point. There must me a ton of better middle infield prospects around. I'll go look for them now.

see him several times
don't know who your questioning on big and strong, i said he is wiry but with his height and build now, he will probably add 15-20 lbs in muscle the next few years just to keep up with a 162 game season. . .

Unsold on Wood
So far, I see a player who has had one spectacular year in a high offensive league. I want to see him repeat something like 05 before I believe it is more than a fluke or product of a great HR league.

I have heard mixed reviews of his defense, including rumors of his move to 3rd.

As I mentioned in another thread, Pecota has him having less than half the VORP next year of either Kendrick or Pedroia (if they were all to play in the majors). I usually take Pecota with a large grain of salt for anyone who has yet to play significant time above A ball. In this case, though, last year just looks too out of place with the rest of his record to take it that seriously.

by cdamon on Jan 19, 2006 11:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Defensive knocks
only reason he would move to third is if he outgrows SS, he has a wiry frame and if he would put on say 15 pounds of muscle in a two year span he could be shifted to 3b. . . right now he would be average + at SS.

no
It's possible Kerry Wood is healthy for you. It's possible Brandon Wood turns out. But for me I take the guaranteed in Miggy. Just too many questions on both guys.

I think you are smart enough when a rookie has a huge season to sell high. Well your fellow owner is trying this with you.

Most guys that trade stars for rookies are guys waiting for that perfect team. While sitting at the bottom of the standings.

Arizona HS player of the year?
So what.
Drew Henson was National Player of the Year.

Obviously, Wood has had the better MiLB career, but you'd be nuts to give up a perennial MVP candidate who's a lock for the HOF for potential. Tejada's only 29, he's not 39.
Are you sure this kid with no MLB at-bats is going to be better than Tejada? Really?

by Athletic Supporter on Jan 20, 2006 1:48 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ohhh
Ouch....good point. But, I still would make the trade. I really like Brandon Wood.

by grandslam on Jan 20, 2006 11:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

his upside
if everything pans out for wood, he's basically... tejada, right? he could hit around .290 with 30-35 homers, and he could stick at short. but he also might not; and even if he does, he's very unlikely to be the most durable player since ripken.

keep miggy. he's even better in roto than in real baseball, where he's already an elite player, because his RBIs help you and his mediocre OBP doesn't matter.

Agreed
I have to agree with a lot of these posts.  I am a die-hard Cubs fan and wouldn't trust Kerry Wood in the least.  As for Brandon, I myself have him on my team and can't wait to see what he can do in the bigs, but Tejada...way to much to give up on an unproven talent.

Autograph/Question
Headed to a card show this weekend to get Wood's auto on the sweetspot of an MLB ball (he's a free auto).  Looking forward to it.

In those settings, I usually have enough time to ask a guy a question.  What would you suggest I ask Wood?

by FredUD on Jan 20, 2006 9:08 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

To clarify...
...I was talking about Brandon Wood.

My bad
Ask Brandon when he's going to make the show.

where
where's he signing?

In Houston
at the Tristar show.

Ask him
to stop listening to Dusty Baker.

Especially the next time Baker wants to go out and pitch the 7th inning of a 6 run ballgame after already throwing 100 pitches.

Wow. Great feedback
And it's about what I was thinking too.

Tejeda is my only real talent on this team too.

I just hate to have a premium talent sitting there when I know my team isn't going anywhere.

by Montreal97 on Jan 20, 2006 9:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No chance
I'd never do this deal.  Miggy, even disgruntled, is one of the top 10 players in baseball right now.  Kerry Wood is still a major injury risk, and even when he did pitch last year, his numbers weren't very good.  Brandon Wood could be really, really good, but he's still just a prospect.

Unless you're trying to rebuild, this isn't a move that's going to help you.  And if you ARE rebuilding, you should ask for more top-tier prospects and leave Kerry Wood out of the deal.

by lenred on Jan 20, 2006 10:10 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think you're right
I am trying to rebuild, so why would I want K. Wood.

I originally asked for A. Sisco and Pawlek but he's since backed off those. He won't give up Hill and after that he doesn't have any top tier talent.

Wood You...
dump Jennifer Garner for a girl who's really, really cute in Middle School? Dance with who you brung and enjoy her (er, him) for all he's giving you now.

Even if the
the rest of my team is made up of the geatrics ward of a local hospital?

by Montreal97 on Jan 20, 2006 10:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No concerns about Miggy's 2nd half?
It was quite a dropoff, I wouldn't be doing the deal but I'd be very concerned with his 2nd half performance. I wouldn't put him in the top 10 players in roto baseball this year that is for sure.` HQ has similiar worries with a sub 500 slug% projection.

If you are rebuilding and don't expect to compete I'd try to find something other then K Wood. It is a big gamble but if Miggy is your top talent then you need to take chances.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen.

Jim
Jim, you are undervaluing him if you are only trying to get guys like Sisco & Pawlek with Wood.

You have the guaranteed star. Actually there is only one stud SS now since Garciaparra has dropped and ARod is at 3rd.

I think you need to get at least two stud prospects of a group like:

Delmon Young / BJ Upton / Felix / Verlander / Billingsley / Wood / etc.

Although it might be tough to get Felix and a top prospect with him.
