Question for MLB Video Gamers??

I had MVP Baseball 2005 for PS2 last year, but they're not putting out a game this year. I absolutely loved the game, if only for the fact that you had control of your Minor league system from AAA, AA, and your high A ball teams, and you could also play the minor league games.

Does anybody have any recommendations for this year? And do any other games allow you to play your minor league games also? Thanks.

A possibility
The minor leagues were a great touch, but the best part of the game was the amazing engine.

Take Two Games has an exclusive deal with the MLBPA, preventing EA from using real players. Their solution is actually coming out in just a few days - MVP 2006 NCAA Baseball. You now get to play college ball.

from what i have heard
they have the rosters set to the 05 season, so guys like Zimmerman and Pelfrey should be in it

Most Ncaa Games...
are set back a year, so Zim will most likely be in the game.  They are saying that there is a new style of batting, where you pull the L-Analog button back and forward to swing.  You can also create your own school, recruit players and try to make it to Omaha.

I lost sight of the upcoming games. NCAA 2006 baseball sounds great!

MVP 2005
The simulator engine and prospect development engine were both horrible, despite the fantastic gameplay.  No matter how great a pitcher, he could never eclipse 8.5 K/9 in a season.  Also, most hitting prospects developed way too well.  Rocco Baldelli gets 45 HR power eventually most of the time I play a dynasty.

I have MVPedit, Oedit, and all the programs
And I have been on mvpmods.com looking for good slider settings for a long time.  I really don't think the game's that great at simming or dynasty mode.

what is that
I loved MVP05 on Xbox and was given mvp05 CPU a month ago. What are you talking about with the rosters. I am very interested.

High Heat baseball was the best computer game i have played, great minor league talent(if you sharported the rosters)
for pure fun, my legion team spent many between game hours playing RBI

Video Games
As much as EA is to video games as Windows is to operating systems, they make entertaining sports games.  MVP 2005 and the latest Madden were damn entertaining.

I have a couple of quibbles w/ MVP -

First, the home run derbies and other minigames weren't very rewarding.  The HR Derby was ridiculously easy, although it gets interesting if you choose Shibe Park from the Retro parks.

I did find playing in Retro stadiums kind of cool, and the Vintage uniforms were pretty amusing too.

Second, I didn't find it that hard to manage my minor league teams, although it was kind of annoying that they didn't use real names in a lot of cases (anyone who hadn't ever played in the majors or hadn't signed a MLB contract?).

It was a fun game though.

So with NCAA . . . metal bats?  Right?  That should be a fun sound.

I'm not as big a fan of the MLB series though.  Kind of sad there won't be as many more MVP Baseball.

NCAA 06
It hits the stores today and I can't wait to get home and throw it in my Xbox.

I really don't get into college sports and the "ping" in college ball is sooooo annoying.  However, I have a lot to look forward to in this game; load and fire batting system, analog fielding and throwing system, create a team/school, create a ballpark, and create a player features just to name a few.  The gameplay in MVP '05 was hands-down the best on the market last year and I have no reasons to think that NCAA will be anything less.

The super-geeks (i.e. game reviewers) are mixed on some of the new features.  Most under fire is the analog fielding/throwing system.  I doubt most of the reviewers are baseball fans in general let along actually played the sport past age 10.  So, I'm incline not to trust their judgement on this.  The also complain about the increase of errors and no MLB licence.  Uh, hello?  It's called NCAA '06 for a reason.

If you're looking for the "best it can be" review then go to IGN.  They gave it an 8.7/10.  They also wrote a pretty fun article describing a fictional school's season (the IGN Loggers).

MLB '06 by 2K Sports won't be released for another 2 months.  For the last few years I think 2K Sports hasn't been the top dog in baseball like it was for NBA, NHL, and NFL.  I feared that the exclusive licensing would take away their invvoation.  But now detailed information about this year's game is just starting to trickle out.  They've added some new features like their pitching system, new physics engine (a previous beef of mine), and crazy-smart statistical breakdowns that look very promising.  It will also be released on the Xbox 360 whereas NCAA will not (nor is NCAA currently backward compatible).

If anyone cares, I can post a review of NCAA '06 tomorrow afternoon.  I have the day off (no, not just to play video games) so I should have ample time to judge and compare it to MVP '05 and my twisted impression of reality.

Review
I would love to hear a review of the game.  I am on the fence as to whether or not to buy this game.

problem
I had one huge problem with MVP 2005 in the dynasty mode. They make the computer do stupid personell decisions and completely stock one position while ignoring other positions. For example, the computer made the Washington Nationals trade for Jason Giambi and sign Richie Sexson as a freeagent while they already had Nick Johnson. They kept all three on their roster and had Giambi, who they were paying millions, sit the bench and appear in only 10 games the entire season! How can I move players around teams to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen? Its just stupid and very unrealistic.

ditto
I too felt that the progession and roster management engine was far from perfect in the old series.  It was unplayable in '04 and '05 seemed to only improve the player progression.  I was so fond of getting to play with an entire minor league system that I never made it past year 2 of any of my dynasties.  Since I plan to create my own team (read: start with a crappy team), I intend to pay closer attention to the progession and roster management engines.  With shorter seasons and 5 years max to have a player I can only hope that they figured this stuff out this time.  I'm too impatient to have to wait 6 years before my team is any good and I refuse to play with one of the powerhouse teams.

by Jaerbesan on Jan 19, 2006 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely wasn't perfect
But it wasn't horrible either.  If it had any problems in player progression, it was that the progresses and declines in speed and hitting and pitching ability didn't make a lot of sense sometimes.  I did like the batting practice bit though, where you could take BP in spring training with the opportunity increases your stats.

Although because of that, in year 2 of my Dynasty, Lance Berkman had turned into a God, had hit 10 HR in about 20 games, and started getting IBBs like he was Barry Bonds.

Oh, and in a somewhat related note - my favorite reliever in the game?  Brian Fuentes.

re
yeah, I use the Dbacks and created Upton, and he became a stud in one spring!! I created him at realistic levels (mostly 30's in ave and Hr's across the board), but I used all my mini-games with him and combined with the fact he was a 5-star player, saw him jump 20-30 points in everything!

I also saw the other end of the spectrum. They made Carlos Quinten actually drop levels in 2007 spring training! A guy that is still maturing and hasn't even reached his prime dropping in power numbers!?!

Mvp05 vs. 2K05
MVP blew it away. I got both and only played 2K05 about six hours. The minors roster was stupid and I did not even bother with it. The pitching and hitting was also subpar.

In MVP Pettite's cutter is unhitable. He is the only pitcher I have thrown a perfect game with and thrown about 8 of them.

Any links to reveiws of 2k06 would be appreciated.
