Tulo vs Penn

Thoughts?

I'm considering picking up one of them in one of my Diamond Mind League.

I have a good set of pitchers so I'm leaning towards Tulo but just unsure.  I already have Lester and McCarthy and have a solid 4 pitchers already in my rotation.  I have little or no depth at the SS position.  I have J Uribe right now but no one on reserves.

Thanks for any insight.

personally i would grasp the tulo without hesitation on this one.  disregarding your team need that would be my inclination, and the fact that you don't have an incumbent just clinches it.

i think a lot of people get turned off by the incessant tulowitzki = bobby crosby comparisons, but i think crosby himself is a little underrated and hasn't peaked yet.  he was looking pretty freaking good last year before he kept hurting himself.  plus, i mean, coors field.

why?
Why would people be turned off by Tulo/Crosby comparisons? Maybe they won't after he OPS' north of .850 this year....

well, that's kind of my point
seems like a lot of people want shortstops to be compared to nomar or tejada, or at least jeter, before they get excited.

tulowitzki
without question, I am taking Tulo. Should be a very solid SS in the near future (sometime in 2007) and as a bonus he will play in Colorado.

Take Penn...
He's a year younger than Jon Lester and put up better peripherals in the same league.

If Penn were in the Red Sox system, he'd be considered a top 25 prospect.  Don't shy away because he's in a system with so little hype - he's the real deal.

Lester vs. Penn
Their K/9 and BB/9 are similar (Lester has a slightly higher BB/9 ratio), but Penn has a slightly higher HR rate.  Penn had an BA against of .248, Lester was at .215.  Penn's much more hittable...

Now I like Penn, but I don't think he's nearly as good as Lester...and I don't think this is Boston bias either.

he may be the real deal
but he's a pitcher compared to a Coors field SS. Should be no contest, take the SS.

SS at Coors in 2007?
Isn't that position already taken -- by a young man who was running away with R-O-Y before he got hurt? Or is Tulo or Barmes looking at 2B at Coors in 2007?

by Jihan1 on Jan 14, 2006 4:00 PM EST reply actions

2b
If anybody is moving, it will be Barmes.  Tulo is pretty big for a SS, but supposedly he is projected as being the better defender.
