Crystal Ball

The Crystal Ball feature for Lastings Milledge seems popular, so we'll add it to the rotation. What other players would you like to do?

Up with the Sox, but still a prospect. Be interesting to see if his last two outings have changed any minds.

September call-up, but position is a question, as is his adjustment to AAA pitching.

if only because it will take a huge stretch of the imagination due to his age (17), and there is such a wide range of paths his career could take.

Francisco Liriano
I love the crystal ball.  John, you're the best.  Just don't make me cry when you pen that Liriano signs with the White Sox in 2010 as a free agent and then proceeds to rack up 3 Cy Young's with those evil-doers.

Honestly, any prospect would be fine.  I'll read them all.

I'd like to see some of the guys who are tougher to get a read on, i.e. Yusmeiro Petit or Matt Bush...

The DVD trio
Since their such a hot topic, and such a breath of fresh air (possibly) to Ranger fans, maybe do a special Crystal Ball version for John Danks, Edison Volquez, and Thomas Diamond.

Hanley Ramirez
Scouts love him, Statheads aren't so amorous.  The Sox brass say he'll "electrify Fenway".  Is he Nomar II or Juan Encarnacion?  What does the future hold?  Who knows (maybe John) . . .

A couple to look at
Ryan Howard
Robinson Cano
Johnny Gomes
Chase Utley

Guys who have some body of work but have flaws that would make a crystal ball on them interesting.  Cano has dipped, Gomes does not have a history that says the future will be what the present is, Howard can't hit lefty pitching, etc.

The Arizona Hotties
I'd like to see some organized speculation about what happens to Arizona's crew of hot prospects:  Jackson, Quentin, Drew, Upton, Hairston -- who gets blocked, who stays, who goes, who emerges as a star, who becomes a serviceable regular, etc.

by 3Com Park on Sep 7, 2005 12:14 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Second that
I was thinking of Quentin myself.

I think
there are several guys who would make interesting cases for the crystal ball:

Matt Cain
Kyle Davies
Clint Everts
Edwin Jackson
Fred Lewis
Andy Marte
Anthony Swarzak

I know these guys are seeing time in the majors, but could make for interesting cases as well:

Austin Kearns
Chris Burke
JJ Hardy

Yeah
I think some have better ceilings/futures than others, but I think they all have some kind of question about them that would make them a good discussion/debate.

Delmon Young
Delmon Young, Delmon Young, Delmon Young, Delmon Young, Delmon Young.....

IMO, in his "ten peak years" he'd hit for averages ranging from .290-.330 and hit from 35-45 homers along with 10-25 steals.

honest feedback
This is a cool feature potentially. But honestly, I don't think it will be worthwhile unless it is restricted to uber talented blue chip guys who are household names in the prospect enthusiast community that have dominated in the minors.

I don't feel the feature will do too well if it featured guys like Sonnastine, Danks and Fred Lewis. I don't see the point of forecasting these guys to have 10-15 year careers.

Before I get flamed, I'm not trying to pick on anyone's prospects... just trying to give John some well rounded honest feedback...

by natsfan2005 on Sep 7, 2005 3:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thats exactly
Why I would think it would be interesting.. why does it have to be a house hold name?  Anyone who's on this site should have a fairly good grasp on the minors anyway.  And I think a guy like Fred Lewis is interesting cause I think he could go either way...

by cincyinco on Sep 7, 2005 5:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Fred Lewis, yes
I'm less interested in the household names.  I like this feature because it gives a context to the "maybe" stars.  "How big should our eyes be?" that's the question that I am not good at.

by achiappanza on Sep 8, 2005 1:16 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

100% disagree
Their are other vehicles to review the second and third tier prospects. To use this vehicle, which presumably predicts 8-15 year careers, on a prospect just as likely to be a bench player or not stick as he is to be an everyday non-all-star player, seem miscast to me. I'd like to see John focus on player who will definitely have a career as starter and then give insights on what that career will look like rather than project someone that there is still tons of doubt whether they will play.

All prospects are good, how about some Indians...
prospects...

Hello everyone,

Thanks John for doing this - we greatly appreciate it! :-)

I know Ryan Garko, Adam Miller, Franklin Gutierrez, and possibly Brad Snyder were mentioned (I don't know if he meant the Indian or the Athletic, or both.)

In addition, how about...

RHP Fausto Carmona
RHP Fernando Cabrera
RHP Andrew Brown
LHP Jeremy Sowers
1B Ryan Mulhern
1B Stephen Head
1B Michael Aubrey (if you think he stays healthy and plays baseball.)
RHP Dan Denham

There are others in the lower minors I wouldn't mind you looking at, but they may be too far out - I may mention them in another post.

Thanks - take care and have a great day! :-)

What about Stewart, Nelson, Francis, Tulowitzki,Salazar, and Baker, since they are the foundation of Colorado and probably will hint to them ever getting out of their dismal situation.

Only Top Prospects
I agree with the person that said only top prospects should be considered.

Guys I'd like to see:
Ian Stewart, Delmon Young, Joel Guzman, Jeremy Hermida

Maybe it's not even worth doing pitching prospects if you agree that "there's no such thing as a pitching prospect".

A few other Indians to check out...
Hello again John,

If you would, please check out...

Current Players:

C Victor Martinez
DH Travis Hafner
CF Grady Sizemore
OF Coco Crisp
SS Jhonny Peralta
2B Ronnie Belliard

Potential Future Players (in addition to the other ones I mentioned in my earlier post):

OF/IF Trevor Crowe
OF John Drennan
LHP Rafael Perez
RHP Jason Davis
LHP Billy Traber
LHP Brian Tallet
RHP Nick Pesco
INF Eider Torres
SS Ivan Ochoa
INF Argenis Reyes
RHP J.D. Martin
RHP Jake Ditter
RHP Thomas Mastny
LHP Scott Roehl

There may be others that I'm forgetting, but I think this is a good start at looking at future contributors from the Indians farm system.

Thanks again John for doing this - it's a great feature - I really enjoyed the Lastings Milledge feature; please do more of them on a regular basis - if you can include some Indians, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Not to play Devil's Advocate, but...
Hello everyone,

UncleMiltie - I agree that it would be nearly impossible to do a "future outlook" on every prospect, but what constitutes a "top prospect"?  What if he doesn't have as great a year as expected like Ian Stewart or Joel Guzman?  You can certainly argue Delmon Young and Jeremy Hermida had as good a year as they were expected to, but I think Stewart and Guzman fell back a tad this year (Stewart because of injuries and inconsistency after the injuries; Guzman because of his plate discipline and questions about his work ethic.)

Therefore, "top prospect" may be hard to define.  How about at least one from every team - each team's top prospect so that all team's fans can enjoy a glimpse into their team's futures?

Then, after analyzing each team's "top prospect" you could do "top prospects" or well-known names on current Major League Teams or well-known Minor Leaguers.  Or, you could do Top 3-5 Minor Leaguers from each team, going from one team to another every day or every other day, especially during the offseason when topics may be harder to come by.

But, I believe every team should have at least one prospect (arguably their "top prospect") analyzed and each team's fan should be able to glimpse into their possible team's future.

Just my 2 cents. :-)

How about him? Will he be the ace of the Yankees staff soon?

by 12to6 on Sep 7, 2005 7:44 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hanley ...
Hanley Ramirez would be an interesting choice.  I'm 100% that I'm not sure :-).

In my 20's, I was always fascinated by the next great star in the NCAA basketball (remember Roy Marble?).  Now that I've hit 30, I look at numbers more, and I just do not understand whether HR will be a 'prodigal son', or a 'star among stars'...

Like others have said, John, any Crystal Ball profile is a must read.

Thanks for your time and amazing insight!

-- Jeff.
