Reyes called up

From Rotoworld.com
"Anthony Reyes will be called up to make a spot start tomorrow against the Brewers.
Everyone in the rotation will be pushed back a day. Reyes is expected to head right back to Triple-A after receiving the start. He'll return in September, but it will take an injury to make him worth using in NL-only leagues. Aug. 8 - 8:17 pm et"

Nice to see he'll get his intro against a team that is less than stellar, it's tough having your first game against a strong lineup.  Any thoughts on what Reyes (3.44 106 k, 28bb, 9hr in 104IP) will do tonight?  This kid doesn't gettalked about nearly enough.

No love..
I whole-heartedly agree!  I think he should be mentioned with the likes of Felix and Verlander among the top pitching prospects in baseball.

I think he will be a vital part of the cards rotation in the next handful of years once they open a rotation spot for him.

Reyes
He's good but has had injury problems.main reason he's not a top guy.

Before injury's
He was the ace of USC.  This is what I've heard, he was better than the #2 starter for that team, Mark Prior.

Just what I've heard
I don't know that it's true (probably isn't), just throwing it out there:)

not true
Reyes was always second fiddle to Prior.

ding ding!
yes that is correct.

Actually
Reyes was touted ahead of Prior during College, but he was sidetracked by injuries.  Something that happens to most pitchers, including Prior and Felix "The Messiah" Hernandez.

with all due respect
that is absolutely false.  Out of H.S. Prior was a phenom and the Yanks couldn't offer him enough to keep him from Vanderbilt.  When Prior transferred, it was written up like the greatest coup around.  Reyes was never above Prior.  MP was the Top Dog for 2 years at 'SC.

BA
BA wrote Reyes up as having more potential than Prior on more than one occasion, including their 2004 Prospect Book (which I don't have handy or I'd quote it).

Prior
started all Friday night games (#1 pitcher) and was the consensus #1 pick for the draft before the season began.

Reyes vs. Prior
Is that the '04 Handbook where he was ranked No. 19 in the Cards' system?
Reyes gained national attention as a freshman at USC in 2000, pitching better than teammate Mark Prior at times as the Trojans advanced to the CWS. But while Prior built on that experience, Reyes failed to live up to expectations and struggled with injuries.

Reyes was drafted by the Tigers in the 13th round in '02 after a disappointing junior season, but didn't sign. The Cards then took him in the 15th round the next year.

Doesn't sound like a guy who was regarded as having more potential than Prior to me. Granted, there's a chance Reyes has the more successful career. But to suggest Reyes was the better amateur prospect is revisionist history.

Reyes
The blockquote I posted "Reyes gained national attention..." is the lead to Reyes's entry in the '04 Handbook.

I don't doubt Reyes is a good prospect, but he simply was not in Prior's league as an amateur. A lot of hype surrounded Reyes because of his stellar sophomore year, 2001. At that point, he looked like a sure high first-rounder for the '02 draft--maybe the first pitcher taken. But he stumbled badly as a junior (and again as a senior), so much so that teams were not willing to risk high picks on him.

The Cardinals deserve credit for taking a chance. They got a good pitcher at a discount; now they pray he stays healthy.
