what are the Jays doing with McGowan??

The kid had tommy john surgery a year ago and the Jays are throwing this kid to the wolves every 5 days. First of all, hasn't he thrown enough this year? You need to be very careful with these kids during their first year. Second, his ERA in the bigs is close to 8. Won't this wreck his confidence? I sure do hope that Lilly comes back soon so that they can shut down McGowan for next year.

McGowan

He is getting thrown into the fire a little earlier than management would've liked, but he's the best option the Jays have for that role and decided to give him a early audition. From what I've been hearing, even if Lilly comes off the DL, it might be Scott Downs moving back to the bullpen and not McGowan, because Downs is valueable in the bullpen and McGowan will ultimately become a starter.

Secondly, McGowan has been shakey at times, but he has not pitched as badly as his 8ERA might suggest. He got rocked for 9 runs (I think) about a week ago, and the bullpen also let in a few of his inherited runners to score. He is usually good for 1 bad inning a night, but has been dominant at times.

I think he could be ready for full-time action by mid-year 2006.
