Needing some help

With the imminence of September call-ups, i'm trying to compile a list of some pitchers who will see some time.  I'm trying to conserve some spots on my keeper league for this very reason.  Besides Liriano (who may or may not see some time), who will be some Starting Pitchers who may get called up to get some Major League experience?

I will appreciate any help possible.

I would think out of the pen
He's still a young guy and they'll probably want to protect his arm from too many innings, especially with the sore shoulder earlier in the season.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

Call ups
Among AL pitchers I think that Zumaya is a real possiblity for a call up.  Ditto for Scott Baker. Volquez is also a possibility.  With Verlander unlikely, I agree that Liriano is the best combination of likelihood of coming up and likelihood of making an impact as soon as next year.

A. Miller - definitely not!
Hello everyone,

Adam Miller will almost assuredly not be called up to the Majors this year; he is just starting to show his "old self" in terms of dominance and striking out guys at High A Kinston.  I'm not sure he will even be promoted to AA Akron until next year - there's virtually no way he gets called up.

If he stays healthy and progresses as he did - this time in 2006 may be another matter.

If you're looking for Indians Starting Pitching Prospects, check out AAA RHP Fausto Carmona; chances are, he will probably get called up, although I don't know how much he will start, if at all.  It depends on where the Indians are at in the Wild Card and Central Division races; presuming they are in either or both of those races, Carmona probably doesn't get much of a chance to start.  But, I still think he will get called up.

An outside possibility of an Indians Starting Pitching Prospect to get called up is LHP Jeremy Sowers - the way he has handled AA Akron (Eastern League,) I think there is an outside chance he could be called up.

Carmona is a better bet, but it wouldn't totally shock me if Sowers is called up.  I personally would consider him for AAA Buffalo (International League) and wait until sometime next year for him to be promoted to Cleveland, provided he progresses.  But, it wouldn't totally shock me if they did call up Sowers.

I would think Carmona will definitely be called up, but I don't know how many starts he will get.  Few and far between if our five starters stay healthy and pitch well, as well as the Indians staying in the race(s.)

Others - just my personal opinion and guesses:

Lester - called up - yes; how many starts - debatable, especially if Boston's lead is precarious as it is now (only 3 games.)

James - called up - yes; again, starts are debatable as Atlanta's lead is also precarious.

Volquez - called up - maybe, but I don't think he's ready yet, so I would say no.

(I would also say the same with Thomas Diamond and John Danks as well - no, Texas would be better off allowing the three of them to adjust and have success at AAA before promoting them to the Majors.)

Bannister - called up - yes; probably will get some starts because the Mets are running out of time and they need to get ready for next year.

(Also check out Yusmiero Petit, the other Mets pitching prospect - just got called up to AAA and pitched well against Buffalo - if he keeps doing that, he may also get a look.)

Haigwood - No - Just reached AA (I believe); plus, the White Sox now have to start playing better or risk losing their playoff start.

Patton - No, still at High A; Wild Card spot not secure for the Astros.

Kuo - Yes, LA needs to prepare for next year as they are running out of time and there are some question marks in their pen; Kuo is dominating at AA (but I believe he is a reliever, not a starter.)

Gio Gonzalez - No, only High A and White Sox are now in a race.

Gaby Hernandez - No, only High A and Mets will look at Bannister and Petit.

Swarzak - No, I believe he has struggled at AA, plus the Twins are still fighting for a Wild Card Spot.

Rainville - Is he a Twins' prospect?  Not sure on him, but if he's who I think he is, no, Twins are still fighting for a Wild Card spot.

Smit - No, I believe he's only at High A (or is he at AA?)  Either case, the Twins are still battling for the Wild Card and need their experienced bullpen to protect leads.  I'm not sure whether Smit is more of a starter or a reliever.

Gorelezanny - Some others here say no, but I still think there is a chance he could be brought up.

However, I would look at Ian Snell and Bryan Bullington from AAA Indianapolis before Gorzelanny.

A.Miller - No (see above.)

I hope this helps - good luck to you in finding useful starting pitching prospects. :-)

I second you, slickwdb!
Hello everyone,

What I am referring to is the "Go Bisons" part of your post.  Being an Indians' fan, I follow our Minor League affiliates also and root for them as well, both in terms of development and in terms of wins. :-)

Go Tribe and all its affiliates! :-)

Travis Bowyer?
Doesnt he deserve a shot?

by Boxkutter on Aug 24, 2005 6:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I would think so...
Hello everyone,

Boxkutter - Yes, I would think Bowyer deserves a shot; plus, guys like Romero and Rincon haven't been performing as well as in the past.  Also, Crain hasn't been that great either, so I would think bullpen reinforcements would almost be a certainty.
