Cesar Carrillo

Cesar Carrillo, the 18th pick in the 2005 MLB Draft, has already pitched in A and AA. His delivery (if you havent seen it) looks a lot like Tim Hudsons. He also has a mid 90's FB, and a devestating change....like Hudson.

In A, he did the following:
4 games - 19.1 IP - 1 Win - 0 Losses - 20 K's - 3 BB

Pretty impressive if you ask me, and the Padres believe so as well. A few days after his 4th game, he was sentcalledup to AA.

In 1 game at AA so far, he did the following:

6.2 IP - 5 Hits - 1 BB - 4 ER - 8 K's (win)

I wouldnt be worried about the 4 ER. The WHIP is a better indication...sub 1.00.

About a week ago, Rotoworld.com had this to say:

"It wouldn't come as a total surprise to see him in the majors before the end of the year."

It appears as if Carrillo could become a September Callup, and possibly hit the rotation if an injury was to occur to a SP. Anyway, is he for real? Are the Padres hurying him? Does he have top of the rotation potential, and most importantly...could he be another Tim Hudson?

Opinions appreciated.

Not really a surprise
He was so polished coming out.

Though Padres will never bring him up this season.

he doesnt look like hudson
when i saw him pitch. he didnt showcase a change up either. his outpitch was his curvball and he had a pretty good slider. He looked very polish though, throwing tons of strikes. he located his fastball really well.

But, he didnt remind me of tim hudson at all.

Carrillo
I think Cesar's for real and I don't think the Padres are rushing him. I watched most of his starts in college at Miami and he was usually dominant.

What I found most encouraging was that this season, particularly later in the year when the Canes faced better teams and he didn't have his best stuff, Cesar really pitched. He didn't try to just get by on his stuff.

That said, the big thing that could hold Cesar back (particularly if you're thinking about a September callup in a pennant race) is that he's thrown a lot of innings this year. The Pads might rather shut him down then blow him out this year.

I agree with Mike
I saw Carillo throw against the Huskers here and his stuff didn't impress me at all, which is typical for a college pitcher at the end of a season.  We had heard leading up to the Supers that he was mid-90's but didn't see any of that here. He did have some real pitchability however and kept the Canes around.

I don't like the idea of bringing college guys directly to the majors their first year, particularly starters.  Carillo probably has 150 inning under his belt at this point.
