Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

David Wright

How good is this guy?  I'm really amazed at his production.  He seems to do it all.

.302/.384/.513  30 2B's 17 HR's and 12 SB's.

WOW!  Last year he had a weak BB/K ratio (14/40) and now he's improved that to (50/76).

His D will only improve, but he makes some sick plays already.  That Kevin Mitchell-esque play on Tuesday night shows how instinctive and athletic this guy is.

What's the ceiling?

Ceiling
His ceiling is Hall of Famer, though obviously he has plenty of work ahead for that.  He's a hard working guy who is very talented and understands how to work a count and is a super baserunner.  He has it all.
The week bb/k ratio last year was out of line with his minor league history.  Now that he's comfortably settled in the majors his numbers have all fallen in line with what was projected based on minors.  If he stays healthy he can be a great one.

Yup
Wright, Cabrera, Francouer... I pity the fool who has to pitch in the NL East for the next few years.
Go ahead and shoot your mouth off, like it might kill the silence.

MLB
Now imagine if MLB would actually start to promote some of these guys, like any business with half a clue would!

should be the cornerstone of the team for 10 yrs
if the mets are smart. which they're usually not, but thats the pain in me talking. obviously i love david wright, he is my god. he should eb batting 3rd next year, put beltran 2nd. if he stays healthy i agree with eastin that his ceiling is hall of famer. he's produced from the start. his advanced eye at such a young age bodes well, and his power will only continue to develop. it seems alot of his strikeouts are when he gets called out on strikes, which i think will diminish over the next few years as he gets more comfortable with what he wants to swing at. and i agree that his defense will improve. right now he makes some errors that will disappear with more experience. you can tell from plays like the barehander the other night and the (actually necessary, unlike jeter's) dive into the stands a little while back that he has all the tools to play great defense. glad to see people appreciate him. thanks for starting the diary So Cal Bob.

you are welcome
He's just so much better than I thought at this stage.  I drafted him #4 overall last year behind Mauer, Greinke, and Kazmir.  I'm absolutely thrilled.

Whoa
The real question is: Who are the idiots who passed on Wright?

He went No. 1 overall in our Strat draft. I took Greinke at No. 3. Mauer was 2 and Kazmir somehow lasted until 18.

Wright was absolutely the first player on my draft board, and would have been even if I weren't a Mets fan.

DMB Draft
I took Wright first in our DMB draft. I actually also had the #2 pick in our draft from a trade the prior year; also two days before the draft traded Jeff Weaver, a #2, and my 2006#1 to get the 3rd overall pick.

The top 5:

  1. David Wright
  2. B.J. Upton
  3. Joe Mauer
  4. Zack Grienke
  5. Matt Holliday - WTF?
Other notables:
  1. Dallas McPherson
  2. Nick Swisher
  3. Grady Sizemore
  4. Jorge Cantu
  5. Joe Blanton
  6. Ryan Howard
  7. Jesse Crain
  8. Casey Kotchman
  9. Scott Kazmir
  10. Gustavo Chacin
Swisher was another one of my picks. I flipped him for a #1 next year since my OF was stacked after free agency. That #1 may be the King, Delmon or atleast Hermida...

no idiots
I had picks 2-5 and 7.  Mauer went first.  Then I felt the 2 best pitchers were Kazmir and Greinke and the 2 best hitters were Wright and Upton (after Mauer).

So I came away with those 4 and then Casey Kotchman at #7 after Dallas McPherson went #6.

We are in a keeper league and the only draft eligible players are those have made their MLB debut that year or are not currently on a 40-man roster.

this might not make sense, but..
i cant imagine him falling apart like other met players, because he's a die-hard mets fan since childhood.. he's too into it

Last year was a pretty good indication of that
When the Mets pushed him up to the big show - many critics said it was a bad move because of the team make-up of disgruntled, over the hill veterans that would sour Wright and bring him down.  All he did was give Mets fans hope.

I took him a while ago as a minor league keeper and he has not been on the bench since his call-up last year!  I think they call players like this 5 tool.

Yea
The guy has become my favorite young player in the game. Great player, one of the top 5 3B in baseball this year.

Comps
It's kind of frightening that a lot of people compared him to Rolen, because it looks to me like he's going to be even better.  And Rolen at 23 was making people in Philly very excited (.290/.391./.532, 31 HR, 14 Steals, 45 DOUBLES)

Wright strikes out much less already, he looks like he has comparable power (playing in Shea doesn't really help, even though he's hit better at home), and his defense will improve.

Best of all?  No health issues so far.

As a Met fan, Wright was the one bright spot last year.  Him and that bizzare series against the Cubs late in the year.  I could almost (almost...) forgive them for the Kazmir move.

Wright on.
Wright seems so mature as a young player. His plate approach reminds me a lot of Edgar Alfonzo when he first came up...patient and not afraid to hit to all fields.

Also, why can't my fellow Met fans just let the Kazmir trade go? Sure we could have gotten more for the young phenom, but what's done is done. That's like looking back and bemoaning when the team gave up on Izzy (for 1.5 months of Billy Taylor, woohoo), or the glorious Kent-Baerga trade. Bad trades happen to all clubs, you just have to change GMs and move on...

Perhaps this would make a good diary/article. Is there statistical evidence to show which team has been the most mismanaged, in terms of trades, over the past 10 years?

Eric Hillman, where art thou?
