From Sickels' analysis, "Matt Green, RHP, University of Louisiana-Monroe 2.65 ERA, 10-2 record, with 141/26 K/BB ratio in 105 innings. All numbers better than average, with particularly impressive K/IP ratio. Excellent stats, and he has a good arm to boot, with a 91-95 MPH fastball, a good breaking ball, and sharp command. His biggest problem is having pitched for a smaller school, rather than one of the major baseball powers. 6-5, 210 pounds. Projection: people are talking about third round, but he could go higher than that to a college-oriented club.

Lizard King
Drennen: Rather have him then Trevor Crowe. Crowe is Danny Putnam with a l ittle better stats.
Lowrie: No need to explain
Thompson: BA said he is the most polished lefty out of high school, and Jacob Marcuaex who i realloy wanted was already gone. I wasn't planning on taking thompson, bujt at that point there weren't many good college pitchers.
Matusz: Yes, he's another high school. But our system is short on lefties, and he's a "classic projectability" pick with great numbers.
Durant: He ha s great power potential and goes to Berkeley High, my home town high school. So i really wanted him.
Powers and Cooper were Al's picks, but they were good picks.
Realistically, there were no good college pitchers left to take in the second round.
by ohad on Jun 6, 2005 6:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
According to BA!
Even then: Iorg, Headley and Slowey went within 10 picks of where you took Thompson; Maxwell, Mason and Garza went within 10 picks of Matusz; etc. etc. There were guys, like Cameron Blair and Sergio Pedroza (who I pitched to you guys for your last pick), who you probably didn't even have on your board at all, ohad, who would have been more 'classic' A's picks.
Will Carroll's point was spot-on -- Baseball America has something of a monopoly on amateur baseball knowledge, for better or for worse.
Realistically, I could see Drennan as a Beane pick, but not where they'd have to take him to get him. I could also see Matusz, moreso than Thompson, being a Beane pick -- but again, he should go higher than Oakland would be willing to take him.
I'm not saying you did a bad job drafting -- we weren't supposed to be "following a script", after all (says the guy who drafted Clement over Zimmerman), just doing our own thing. But don't defend yourself by saying something like "there were no good college players left in the second round." That's just silly.
by ESiegrist on Jun 6, 2005 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I said college pitchers
I just didn't want Garza.
Cmon man, realistically there weren't any other college pitchers worth taking with the 53 pick, and i wanted a pitcher. Maybe 1. Realistically, there were only 2-3 worth taking in the second round period with how the draft was going. Jacob Marceuax and Lance Broadway, my two main pitchers before the draft were WAY gone.
by ohad on Jun 6, 2005 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're Missing My Point
by ESiegrist on Jun 6, 2005 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So there were two college pitchers
I chose to take Thompson, i see nothing wrong with that. Because in my opinion, the A's are missing high upside lefty "projects" that will take more than a year and a half to get to the majors.
by ohad on Jun 6, 2005 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll Take a Look
There is nothing wrong with taking Thompson. I had the other guys ahead of him because my personal preference was, if I was going to take a polished pitcher without much projectability, I wanted him to be tested against higher competition -- and even then, I liked Matusz in the 'polished HS lefty' category better than Thompson.
I'm just saying, stop trying to have it both ways -- you made a conscious decision in the draft to ignore the 'Beane woulda taken all college guys with great K/BB rates!' line of thinking. Why change your tune now? Say you picked Thompson because you liked Thompson, as you just did, not because you "couldn't" pick someone more Beane-y.

DrennEn
I take Drennen over Crowe because he has more development ahead for that power, and we won't be needing any outfielders for another 2-3 years. Kotsay and Swisher are here to stay, Ethier is almost there and Putnam will be there in two years as well. I like Drennen to take over after Kotsays (hopefully) contract extension.

by novaoakland on Jun 6, 2005 5:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I wasn't disturbed by your picks
Regarding Crowe Drennan:
Crowe is not like Putnam, he is most like Johnny Damon.
Drennan is the guy who is more like a Putnam or Brian Giles.
I misread your Putnam comparison yesterday, because I knew Drennan was the Putnam like person. You actually made a case against drafting Crowe using Putnam as the reasoning, when in actuality the guy you chose is much more like him. That is some crazy irony that I wish I caught on to yesterday.
I am amazed you feel its harder to find a good college pitcher after around pick 50 than it is to find a good high school pitcher. I entirely dissagree with that assertion. I think it is a far bigger crapshoot to go with the high school guy. There were plenty of higher rated college pitchers available at your selection. You chose to ignore them. According to the BA top 200, quite a few choices were made where we took a player rated far lower than our draft spot. That makes it almost mathematically impossible for there to be no higher rated college players available.
I was actually very dissapointed with the choices, apart from Lowrie, and the way you handled the supposed democratic forum you were in charge of moderating, not deciding what to do for yourself.
by LizardKing51 on Jun 6, 2005 5:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
re: disturbed
I wasn't disturbed by your picks as much as that you made all the choices ahead of time and it wasn't a community project at all. There are many A's fans interested in the minor league/draft aspect and it was pretty obvious from the beginning that our input wasn't going to affect the choices made.
agreed. although I don't think a 12 year old was ever going to run the draft in anyway other than on his terms.

by ohad on Jun 7, 2005 3:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Your not rubbing anything as far as I see
Trevor Crove OF gone before our pick at 21
Travis Buck OF we took him at 36 and i would have gotten him at 53
Matt Garza RHP taken at 25 I would have taken him at 69
Ryan Mullins LHP went within 3 picks of where I suggested in the 3rd round
Josh Geer RHP went at 98 and I would have taken him at 131
Matt Green RHP went at 49 I suggested him at 69 and 3rd if he would have fallen.
Slowey went at 73 and I put him in my initial mock draft at 101 (rated 107 by BA)
Jordan Brown went 124 and I put him at a possibility at 161
Nix and Slayden are the only guys left undrafted I mentioned and they were mentioned as 4/5th type guys
Your guy Aaron Thompson was a good find, and we agree on Lowrie and were both interested in Ellsbury.
Bryan Morris you suggested at 53 went at 88
Craig Italiano you suggested at 53 and we took him (good)
Sean O-Sullivan you suggested at 53 and he went at 103
Tyler Herren you suggested at 53 and he went at 46
Brian Matusz you took at 69 and he still hasn't been drafted
Mike Durant you took at 131 and he went at 127
Josh Wall still undrafted
Anthony Varvaro still undrafted
The record of my choices far exceeds yours, so your rubbing doesn't bother me. I firmly believe my draft would far exceed yours in all aspects.
by LizardKing51 on Jun 7, 2005 4:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
To Finish this comparison
Josh Wall 74 (missed seeing him being drafted) but you mentioned him as a late round possibility in the mock and he went 56 in the mock so your idea became moot
Anthony Varvaro 353 Tommy John
Mine
Nix 347 (Can't believe he dropped this far)
Slayden 247 injury history
