Crowe
I'd say Crowe over Ellsbury, but if both are there it's a good situation to be in.

by WillieMcGeeModelingCompany on Jun 5, 2005 2:20 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Crowe plays in a hitters park
Ellsbury plays @ Oregon State which is similar to the coliseum in size

The top three so far that i'm thinking of are Drennen, Ellsbury and Crowe.

Ellsbury would be my pick but
Cubbies are thinking of taking him with #20

Good Choice
I would have gone with Torra, but Drennen's not bad. Crowe just screams of Putnam with less power.

by Roscoe Parrish on Jun 5, 2005 3:04 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lmao
We literlaly both thought of Putnam at the same time.

Drennen!!!!!!

by novaoakland on Jun 5, 2005 3:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

At least it's intriguing
Plus, the last high-round highschooler the A's picked (Webb) is doing pretty well. Moneyball comes to the gym class!

by WillieMcGeeModelingCompany on Jun 5, 2005 3:05 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Something about Crowe
He's already 22, and i didn't want to take a Danny Putnam redux type player (ie polished college bat) Crowe is probably better than putnam. But i like Drennenns power potential.

Drennen: .500 92 51 46 10 3 15 46 12

Thats 15 homers, 46 rbi's, 12 steals, 500 average in 92 at bats and 51 runs.

Late Round Picks.: Josh Wall,  Anthony Varvaro,

If I'm not here for the 55, take Aaron Thompson. If he's not available take Bryan Morris. If he's not available take Craig Italiano. If he's not there, take Sean O-Sullivan. If he's not there, take Tyler Herren. If He's not there, it's up to you.

"Nice dude! You met a girl on Warcraft?" -my best friend Danny

by Weird Al on Jun 5, 2005 4:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't get our draft system
When John set this whole thing up he stated the moderator is only a moderator (not dictator).  The choices are to be determined through democratic means within the team community.  It doesn't seem like anybody else has much input into our past choices, or future choices even after Ohad is gone.  This project is for the entire community, not the 30 moderators.

I'm trying not to hate on Ohad, but I think his picking system has gotten a little carried away with respect to the rest of the A's community.

There was no way Garza would fall to us
Hopefully this guy is around at our next pick:

From Sickels' analysis, "Matt Green, RHP, University of Louisiana-Monroe   2.65 ERA, 10-2 record, with 141/26 K/BB ratio in 105 innings. All numbers better than average, with particularly impressive K/IP ratio. Excellent stats, and he has a good arm to boot, with a 91-95 MPH fastball, a good breaking ball, and sharp command. His biggest problem is having pitched for a smaller school, rather than one of the major baseball powers. 6-5, 210 pounds. Projection: people are talking about third round, but he could go higher than that to a college-oriented club.

This is crazy
3 of our first 4 picks have been high schoolers.  This draft has been entirely unrealistic with regards to Beane's philosophies.  The following show what round the A's took their third High Schooler each year:

2004 - round 14 through 18 picks (first one taken in round 4)
2003 - round 22 through 24 picks (first one wasn't taken until round 19)
2002 - round 20 through 26 picks (first one wasn't taken until round 18)  Trevor Crowe was the 20th round selection
2001 - round 18 through 20 picks (first one taken was Bonderman in round 1)

I'm done, so if you guys are looking for a 'Beane-ish' pick, you might want to take a look at Sergio Pedroza, Cal St-Fullerton OF/DH:

Lizard King
Do you want an explanation?

Drennen: Rather have him then Trevor Crowe. Crowe is Danny Putnam with a l ittle better stats.

Lowrie: No need to explain

Thompson: BA said he is the most polished lefty out of high school, and Jacob Marcuaex who i realloy wanted was already gone. I wasn't planning on taking thompson, bujt at that point there weren't many good college pitchers.

Matusz: Yes, he's another high school. But our system is short on lefties, and he's a "classic projectability" pick with great numbers.

Durant: He ha s great power potential and goes to Berkeley High, my home town high school. So i really wanted him.

Powers and Cooper were Al's picks, but they were good picks.

Realistically, there were no good college pitchers left to take in the second round.

by ohad on Jun 6, 2005 6:57 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

According to BA!
There were plenty of college guys you could have taken in any of those spots. You just had them lower on your board than the A's probably do, because of how you put together your board.

Even then: Iorg, Headley and Slowey went within 10 picks of where you took Thompson; Maxwell, Mason and Garza went within 10 picks of Matusz; etc. etc. There were guys, like Cameron Blair and Sergio Pedroza (who I pitched to you guys for your last pick), who you probably didn't even have on your board at all, ohad, who would have been more 'classic' A's picks.

Will Carroll's point was spot-on -- Baseball America has something of a monopoly on amateur baseball knowledge, for better or for worse.

Realistically, I could see Drennan as a Beane pick, but not where they'd have to take him to get him. I could also see Matusz, moreso than Thompson, being a Beane pick -- but again, he should go higher than Oakland would be willing to take him.

I'm not saying you did a bad job drafting -- we weren't supposed to be "following a script", after all (says the guy who drafted Clement over Zimmerman), just doing our own thing. But don't defend yourself by saying something like "there were no good college players left in the second round." That's just silly.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

by ESiegrist on Jun 6, 2005 7:40 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I said college pitchers
Not players.

I just didn't want Garza.

Cmon man, realistically there weren't any other college pitchers worth taking with the 53 pick, and i wanted a pitcher. Maybe 1. Realistically, there were only 2-3 worth taking in the second round period with how the draft was going. Jacob Marceuax and Lance Broadway, my two main pitchers before the draft were WAY gone.

You're Missing My Point
BA said there weren't any college pitchers left worth taking with that pick. Clearly, at least two other SDs (the people who took Slowey and Owings) disagreed with BA's assessment. Personally, I had a bunch of college pitchers still on my board ahead of Aaron Thompson at that point in the draft, and I doubt I was the only one.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

So there were two college pitchers
Taken in the second round. How many college pitchers that weren't drafted did you have ahead of Thompson? Seriously.

I chose to take Thompson, i see nothing wrong with that. Because in my opinion, the A's are missing high upside lefty "projects" that will take more than a year and a half to get to the majors.

I'll Take a Look
I don't have the final board in front of me at work. I know I didn't have Owings ahead of him. Pretty sure guys like Green, Lewis, Slowey, Garza, Mason, maybe Lincecum, probably Nick Webber, were though.

There is nothing wrong with taking Thompson. I had the other guys ahead of him because my personal preference was, if I was going to take a polished pitcher without much projectability, I wanted him to be tested against higher competition -- and even then, I liked Matusz in the 'polished HS lefty' category better than Thompson.

I'm just saying, stop trying to have it both ways -- you made a conscious decision in the draft to ignore the 'Beane woulda taken all college guys with great K/BB rates!' line of thinking. Why change your tune now? Say you picked Thompson because you liked Thompson, as you just did, not because you "couldn't" pick someone more Beane-y.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I couldn't
I wanted Jacob Marceaux and he wasn't there. I wanted Thompson after that because i found him better then the others. Thats all.

drennen over crowe
its funny your knock on Crowe is he is too similar to Putnam. Baseball America consistently compares Drennan to Putnam. So basically you still drafted a Putnam-type player, just one that is further from the majors.
Got my nats tickets. Lousy Seats: opening night(D'backs), 5/14(Cubs). Good Seats: 6/2(Braves), 6/9(A's), 7/5(Mets)

Asking with no prejudice.
Why is it bad to have another Putnam? Putnams numbers look solid at this point.

Re: novaoakland
I don't have a problem with Putnam. My point is that Ohad shied away from Crowe for reasons that he was too similar to Putnam. Yet he takes a High School version of Putnam. Seems to me if you go outfield you take Crowe, but maybe you go college pitcher.

DrennEn
Has more power potential than putnam and plays center field. Putnam is mostly a contact hitter with gap power, same as Crowe.

I take Drennen over Crowe because he has more development ahead for that power, and we won't be needing any outfielders for another 2-3 years. Kotsay and Swisher are here to stay, Ethier is almost there and Putnam will be there in two years as well. I like Drennen to take over after Kotsays (hopefully) contract extension.

I get the impression John did not like A's draft!!
Will really be fun though in 2 years to look back and see how everyone did.

Good resume builder!!!

I wasn't disturbed by your picks
as much as that you made all the choices ahead of time and it wasn't a community project at all.  There are many A's fans interested in the minor league/draft aspect and it was pretty obvious from the beginning that our input wasn't going to affect the choices made.

Regarding Crowe Drennan:

Crowe is not like Putnam, he is most like Johnny Damon.

Drennan is the guy who is more like a Putnam or Brian Giles.

I misread your Putnam comparison yesterday, because I knew Drennan was the Putnam like person.  You actually made a case against drafting Crowe using Putnam as the reasoning, when in actuality the guy you chose is much more like him.  That is some crazy irony that I wish I caught on to yesterday.

I am amazed you feel its harder to find a good college pitcher after around pick 50 than it is to find a good high school pitcher.  I entirely dissagree with that assertion.  I think it is a far bigger crapshoot to go with the high school guy.  There were plenty of higher rated college pitchers available at your selection.  You chose to ignore them.  According to the BA top 200, quite a few choices were made where we took a player rated far lower than our draft spot.  That makes it almost mathematically impossible for there to be no higher rated college players available.

I was actually very dissapointed with the choices, apart from Lowrie, and the way you handled the supposed democratic forum you were in charge of moderating, not deciding what to do for yourself.

agreed. although I don't think a 12 year old was ever going to run the draft in anyway other than on his terms.

My Mock Draft Choices
Would have been:
  1. Trevor Crove OF
  2. Jed Lowrie 2B
  3. Travis Buck OF
  4. Matt Garza RHP
  5. Ryan Mullins LHP
  6. Josh Geer RHP
  7. Michael Nix RHP or Jordan Brown 1B
I feel this would make a very successful draft if we got these players in the real draft.  There is little chance most of the players I just chose starting in round 2 will fall that far in tomorrow's draft.

I really liked the Blue Jays mock draft.

Lizard King
What input, we didn't get very man comments.

by ohad on Jun 7, 2005 11:18 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I gave input
on and before the mock draft day.  I think many backed off of even trying when you gave parting orders like this:

"If I'm not here for the 55, take Aaron Thompson. If he's not available take Bryan Morris. If he's not available take Craig Italiano. If he's not there, take Sean O-Sullivan. If he's not there, take Tyler Herren. If He's not there, it's up to you."

and

"Try and pick Brian Matusz in our second of 2 second round picks. and Mike Durant in the fifth. The third round is up to you, take the best player available I would suggest."

Thast because
THere weren't many suggestions!

I said that stuff
Right before the second round...... It's not like i wrote this last week.

by ohad on Jun 7, 2005 12:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You said that
right before you left, removing any democratic system as to who to pick for most of the rest of the way.  What dialogue do you expect from us that can add to your statement: Pick this guy, if he's gone pick this guy, if he's gone pick this guy, etc.  It's pretty cut and dry what was going on with decision making.  What you did would have been fine if this wasn't a COMMUNITY draft, and you weren't drafting for one of the teams with the most minor league and Sickels fans.  A few people showed up early and didn't stick around, probably because they seemed to be not needed.  Only a couple of us stuck around for the whole thing, and that was because we were really interested in the mock draft in general, not because we had any impact at all as to who the A's mock team should take.

I don't hate you and I'm not holding any long term grudges or anything, I just wish things had gone differently.

Your right
I was wrong, sorry. I should have left it up to the concensus istnead of my own wants. Sorry. This wasn't sarcastic.

There is no doubt in my mind
When the mock draft was going on, I'm sure you weren't militiously disregarding our desires.  If I was in your shoes and someone blamed me for doing what I blamed you for doing, I would have thought:  No I wasn't, what are you talking about;  THEN I kinda see what you're saying, but I did care what the other A's fans thought; THEN That sucks some of the community felt left out.

Trust me, I want this thread to end amicably.

not trying to rub anything in
But the A's pretty much did what i had in my philosophy.

by ohad on Jun 7, 2005 3:34 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Your not rubbing anything as far as I see
Almost everyone I said we should draft both in this thread and my prediction 2 weeks ago were long gone in the real draft long before our pick.  I mentioned guys like:

Trevor Crove OF  gone before our pick at 21
Travis Buck OF  we took him at 36 and i would have gotten him at 53
Matt Garza RHP  taken at 25 I would have taken him at 69
Ryan Mullins LHP went within 3 picks of where I suggested in the 3rd round
Josh Geer RHP went at 98 and I would have taken him at 131
Matt Green RHP went at 49 I suggested him at 69 and 3rd if he would have fallen.
Slowey went at 73 and I put him in my initial mock draft at 101 (rated 107 by BA)
Jordan Brown went 124 and I put him at a possibility at 161

Nix and Slayden are the only guys left undrafted I mentioned and they were mentioned as 4/5th type guys

Your guy Aaron Thompson was a good find, and we agree on Lowrie and were both interested in Ellsbury.

Bryan Morris you suggested at 53 went at 88
Craig Italiano you suggested at 53 and we took him (good)
Sean O-Sullivan you suggested at 53 and he went at 103
Tyler Herren you suggested at 53 and he went at 46
Brian Matusz you took at 69 and he still hasn't been drafted
Mike Durant you took at 131 and he went at 127
Josh Wall still undrafted
Anthony Varvaro still undrafted

The record of my choices far exceeds yours, so your rubbing doesn't bother me.  I firmly believe my draft would far exceed yours in all aspects.

by LizardKing51 on Jun 7, 2005 4:30 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To Finish this comparison
Yours
Josh Wall 74 (missed seeing him being drafted) but you mentioned him as a late round possibility in the mock and he went 56 in the mock so your idea became moot
Anthony Varvaro 353 Tommy John

Mine
Nix 347 (Can't believe he dropped this far)
Slayden 247 injury history
