Florida State League All Star Game

Attended the game over in Clearwater tonight.....great looking park, not so great of a game. The rosters were peppered with a lot of guys too old for the FSL and most of the top talents didn't have the stats to merit an appearance at the game this year.

Brent Clevlen won the HR derby over the likes of Matt Moses and Reggie Abercrombie and others. The West team was pretty much the Lakeland Tigers who are currently 50-15 on the season. Clevlen, Span, and Moses highlighted the West roster offensively while the East did not have a lot of talent. The highlight on the East was the defensive play of Brendan Ryan who played a very solid 3B.

Pitching wise the biggest news was that Verlander never even as much warmed up for an appearance. Either the big club told the staff to keep him on the bench because he's on the move or he was resting from his start a few nights ago. Carlos Marmol was not sharp but he was 91-93 on the guns. Chuck Tiffany came in and was also 91-93 with a great curve. His first pitch was a 92mph fastball that Clevlen turned into a 492 ft HR to left center...absolutely crushed it. Justin Orendorff of the Dodgers impressed me tonight as well.

Verlander
I was listening to an interview with Verlander and John Mayo of MLB.com.  He announced on the air that he was not pitching in the game.  He had just thrown his last start in A ball on Thursday night.  I doubt the Tigers would want him to throw again on Saturday....

BTW in other Verlander news he has been promoted to AA Erie.

September
I am not certain he will be up in September.  Given the Tigers recent history with injuries and pitching prospects I think they might watch his innings really closely.  My honest guess is that he will be shut down between 150-170 innings.  At least thats what I would do.

Orendorff
He was in the low 90's with a nice tight breaking ball. He had a smooth delivery and located well. He stood out from what was pretty much a display of bleeech. Sean Marshall was very unimpressive and Mark Worrell of the Cardinals has what has to be the most wretched delivery this side of Craig House.

why? he is having a good year and is a great prospect.

by cangrejero51 on Jun 20, 2005 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

because
he got off to a terrible start.  He's been hot lately, but over the entire 1st half he has been a non-factor.

by So Cal Bob on Jun 20, 2005 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

non factor?
he is hitting .305. He was top 15 in average before the all star. Also has 14 steals.

He's been hot lately as I posted to get his average up.  This isn't a "prospect" game.  It's a true All Star and his numbers weren't worthy at the time of selection.  He still may be the #1 prospect at the end of the year.
