Tony Giarratano called up?!

A day after the Tigers called up Chris Shelton, they reached down to AA Erie to bring up ss Tony Giarratano.  He hardly seems ready and this can only mean that Guillen's knee is in pretty bad shape.

Giarratano's line at Erie is 253/330/388 with 43 strikeouts in 170 at-bats.  He's also made 9 errors.

The next Trammell
Tony G is the next Trammell.  G is a great, pure shortstop with great defensive actions.

He may not have a lot of pop in his bat, but makes good contact and can hit both gaps well.

Don't read too much into his stats this season.  He has struck out a lot, but he's working on adding some loft to his swing.  Yet another reason why looking only at stats is meaningless.

looks good
I just watched him fly out to CF (in his first AB) but he has strong legs, a nice swing and looks like a player.

Granderson
Hey Tigers fans, when's Granderson gonna get the call?

Ordonez and Higginson are down, and Logan's come back to Earth. Are they waiting until June to start his arbitration clock?

Giarratano
I think he was called up because he impressed Tram in spring training when he got a lot of PT with Guillen still recovering.  He's off to a good start so far going 2-5 with 2 walks in his first 2 games and looking good in the field.  His numbers at Erie aren't very good, but he had been playing well recently after a very slow start.  I'd guess this is a short term callup to give Guillen a bit of an extended rest rather than the day off every few days he had been getting.

As for Granderson, he's pretty much pegged for CF.  Rondell White has an 18 game hitting streak going and Craig Monroe is playing pretty good in RF, so there wasn't much room to move people around.  Logan is coming back to earth, but Granderson still isn't tearing up the International League.  I'd guess if Logan keeps cooling off and Granderson keeps heating up that the switch will be made in late June or perhaps July.

Re: Granderson/Logan
Of course, by the time late June/early July comes around Ordonez will be on his way back.

Ordonez
and by the time Ordonez comes back, Rondell White will have been traded.  His trade value has probably never been higher for Detroit.  He has a cheap contract (I think 2 million per year) and is a FA after this season.  Toss in a 20 game hitting streak and he's likely out the door before the deadline.
