Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Justin Verlander

Line for the day

7 IP, 9 hits, 2 runs, 1BB, 3 K's.

The Tigers put up a 9 spot in the 5th and after that, Verlander was just out there throwing strikes and letting the defense do the work. He gave up his first earned run after the 2nd inning of the season today.

Report: 93-97mph all throughout - curveball with a very sharp break to it that was giving hitters fits. Threw a straight change and threw one with some drop on it 2x. Nobody could pull him at all - everything was to center or right center when they managed to get a hit. He worked very quickly and his walk was the very first batter of the game. Command was very sharp and his fastball moves.

Good call on Verlander
Justin Verlander (RHP, DET) continues to dominate at High-A. Through his first 9 starts Verlander is 6-2 with a 1.55 ERA, 11.3 Dom, 5.2 Cmd, and a .220 BAA in 58 IP

Tigers 2008 Rotation
Verlander, Zumaya, Bonderman... nasty. The Dombrowski rebuild seems right on schedule.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I'm surprised, to say the least
I thought Verlander was a huge overshoot at #2, but he really seems to have harnessed his control and I'm quite impressed...

Justin
His control was very sharp yesterday. He was right around the plate most of the day and worked both the inner and outer halves of the plate. He mainly threw his curveball so that it came back over the plate rather than the chaser type. The batters had no clue what to do with other than a hanger that Reggie Abercrombie hit to the wrong park of Joker Marchant Stadium (420 to CF).

If you count the mosquitos, there were 200 in attendance yesterday but it is definitely summer time again in Florida as my legs got fried sitting behind home plate with my feet up.
