Trade: Jerome Williams and Aardsma to the Cubs

Giants acquired pitcher LaTroy Hawkins from the Cubs for pitchers Jerome Williams and David Aardsma.

I didn't see this one coming.  Aardsma's stats at AA are nothing to write home about, with a low strikeout rate standing out.  But, it would likely improve upon his move to the 'pen (which will likely be immediate).

As for Williams, I will be interested to see if he passes his physical.

The Giants may regret giving up on Williams; he has a lot of raw talent . . . but I agree with the post that intimated that there may be a medical issue there.  The other guy looks like he needs a change of scene and maybe some counselling.  The talent may be there, but Aardsma really doesn't look confident against major league hitters, and he's had several opportunities to get rid of that stage fright, or whatever is blocking his ability to perform at that level.  Hawkins?  He's a replacement level arm with experience, the kind of guy that Alou (and Baker) like.  After all, they are the ones whose jobs are on the line.

Coming soon
This move shows that the Giants are going for broke this year, and are willing to face a nasty team rebuild in order to make a run with a very old team.

I predict that the Giants will make more moves...

Coming soon...

The Giants will trade more youngsters to the Mariners for CL Eddie Guardado.  Guardado has a no trade clause, but will likely agree to the trade to play in his home town for a contender.

Ripped off?
I would say the Giants definitely lost out on this one, unless Hawkins turns into some spectacular man and both the others flop, but I don't see that.

Good pickup for G-men
I like this trade... I'm a big J. Williams fan... but he's fallen apart in SF -- he lost total confidence in Fresno... and Aardsma was on his way to middle-inning relief mediocrity... Especially with Cain, Valdez, Foppert, Hennessy, etc. on the way up... Aardsma and Williams were expendable... and Hawkins will do great as a setup man in spacious SBC park.  Hawkins and Benitez will be a great combo.  I think Hawkins will have an Arthur Rhodes-esque improvement with the change of scenery

Sabean is losing it
He's making poor move after poor move to cover the last failed experiment.  Nothing against Hawkins and I'm happy to have him on the team, but it was far too much to give up.  They felt they had to make a move because there was so little quality depth after the loss of Benitez.  They had to sign Benitez because they gave Joe Nathan away for absolutely nothing.  This move reeks of desperation.
Go Giants!
