Davies slated to get the call

Looks like Kyle Davies is scheduled to get a call up for the weekend series against Boston.

Star-divide

Mike Hampton looks like he won't be able to start this weekend for the Braves, and with Thompson out with a finger injury, that leaves the Braves with no choice but to call up a starter for the weekend series with Boston.  Looks like he is going to get the nod for the Saturday tilt.  If he could choose, he probably wouldn't choose as his ML debut.  Maybe this will be a good test to see what he really is capable of.

Davies
I am excited to see what Davies can do.  Pitching at Fenway vs the RedSox has to be daunting, but then so does just pitching in the Majors.

The question is, if he does well then will the Braves send him back down when all starters are healthy?  Or, will they move someone to the pen?  While I want H.Ramirez to remain a starter, he might be a logical choice...

Straight back down
I feel pretty certain he will get sent back down after the start.  Horacio has been very good for a fifth starter, and it's not exactly as if Davies is dominating AAA at the moment.  If their rotation isn't hurting them the Braves will stick with what they have.  Can't see Davies having an impact until next year, unless Thompson or Ramirez get traded.

second that
Davies will be back on the bus on Sunday if Hampton is good for his next start.

ummm...maybe not...
Just saw this on RotoWire:

John Thomson won't have surgery now, but he is expected to miss two or three months because of his injured middle finger.

While an MRI revealed that the flexor tendon on that finger was not torn, GM John Schuerholz said doctors found ''a partial tear of the supporting structures surrounding the flexor tendon.'' The current plan is for Thomson to rest for a month and then spend a month working his way back. However, if the injury doesn't heal on its own, surgery would become a possibility. That would probably keep Thomson out until September or perhaps cost him the rest of the year. May. 19 - 2:15 pm et

So a good start could keep Davies in Atlanta for a while.

so who do i cut for davies?
Ervin Santana
Prince Fielder
Joel Guzman
Carlos Quentin
Andy Marte

Keeper league, but major-league readiness obviously helps a lot.

if you absolutely must have Davies...
I'd say cut 1.) Santana 2.) Fielder

Do not claim Davies at the expense of Guzman, Quentin or Marte!

But really, I'm not so sure Davies is better than any of these 5 high caliber prospects.

Got my nats tickets. Lousy Seats: opening night(D'backs), 5/14(Cubs). Good Seats: 6/2(Braves), 6/9(A's), 7/5(Mets)

wow
i would not cut fielder for davies, don't care if he is in the show right now. Santana would seem logical, replace a pitcher with a pitcher. I think that santana has more upside so you might be advised to wait a bit before dumping santana. If you really really want davies, try dealing off one of those superb hitting prospects, or drop santana if you have can't get a deal done.

Davies vs. Santana
We may be splitting hairs with these guys, but I think Davies is a better bet.  They are the same age, Sanatana has a recent history of injury problems, and then there is the size difference.  They are both 6'2'' or so, but Davies is 190 lbs, while Santana is 150.

maybe Santana
but I'm not sure he's better than any of the guys you listed.

well...
Pitching is at an extreme premium in our league, which is why Davies instantly becomes such a hot commodity. Really, I can't even bring myself to cut Santana, despite the fact that I'm about 90% sure he's going back down in a week or so.

I think I'll end up cutting Prince, because I can't see him having a ton of value at 1b for a good long while. (Also, his cap number is a little too high for me to be all that excited about keeping him for next year, but I didn't tell you guys that part.) I know that people keep claiming he's going to start in Milwaukee next year, but I say that unless he brings up that .231/.354/.328 line and quick, his season stats aren't going to look sharp enough for the Brewers to want to give Overbay away to make room.

True, though, that Prince is a kickass prospect; I may live to regret this, but the possibility of acquiring even a league-average starting pitcher for free is just too much to pass up.

Atlanta Pitchers
One thing to remember about Davies.  He'll be pitching under the watchful eye of Leo Mazzone... there is something to be said for that.

Remember, they DIDN'T trade Davies when they dealt Meyer and Capellan last winter.  That may say something about what they think of him.

Davies
His last couple starts at AAA were very poor after pitching well early in the season.  Thomson is out for 2 or 3 months reportedly so I'm sure Davies will get a long look but those recent starts at AAA are a big question mark.

Looking at the minor leagues I don't see anybody else who jumps out at AAA or AA.  If he doesn't get it done they might go shopping for somebody from a team not in contention.

Hopefully Davies will get it done.

Chuck James, though he just got promoted to AA.
