Getting to the Show

We read and we compare and we're always looking for more information.

But still I don't understand just exactly what the GM's, managers, and player dev guys are looking for when they size up pitchers and position players for a spot in the Show. How does the Front Office know it's time to bring their players up a notch right now?

So tell us, John, in detail...what kinds of progress do the pros look for at every level (especially AAA) of the minor leagues? When does a promotion help or hurt? Why do some advanced prospects get stuck while others are pushed to the top? And most interestingly, why do some guys startle everyone in the Bigs when they barely gained notice in minor league ball?

Best of luck, John, with all your endeavors and thanks for your reporting and insights all these years!
