Around SBN: Race to the Roses & BCS Bowl Predictions

Jayson Nix, 2B, Colorado Rockies

Here is a photo I took last summer of Rockies prospect Jayson Nix, hitting a home run in a July game at Tulsa.

I've barely scratched the surface of using a digital camera, but in my travels this summer I will take photos of anything interesting and post them here. Another advantage of this format!

So where ARE your travels going to take you?
Do you have an itinerary mapped out? And will it take you through the great state of North Carolina? We'd love to have you!

itinerary
Way too early for planning trips just yet. Much depends on who gets assigned where. Depending on my budget I may have to stick to just the Midwest. Someday I would love to take something like a 14-day driving trip to the east and south but circumstances have to be right for that.

Does this include Kane County and/or Midland Rockhounds?

Scouting Report on Nix
Here is the scouting report I wrote on Nix in my newsletter last July 21st, after seeing him play three games for Tulsa against El Paso.

Jayson Nix, 2B, Tulsa

One of the bigger disappointments in the minors this year, hitting just .214/.298/.359, having major problems adjusting to Double-A pitching in his first shot at the level. Although his strikeout rate isn't bad (68 in 82 games), it was obvious that he needs some major adjustments in his mental approach. He was consistently behind in the count, swung at pitches outside the strike zone, and looked like he was trying to pull everything. He did hit one big home run, but he also produced several medium-depth fly balls. On the positive side, he is only 21, and his defense at second base looked quite good. I think he will turn it around.

Nix...
still has the support of the Rockies brass but I see him being passed up on the prospect hierarchy by Matt Macri (assuming his transition from third to second is a smooth one) unless Nix has himself a big year.
