Red Sox get their revenge!

The Yankees may have taken Damon from the Sox, but the Sox struck back by stealing Flaherty from New York!

Star-divide

Seriously, I think the Sox come out ahead on this one.  On arm-strength alone Flaherty puts Damon to shame!  End of discussion!

I hardly think...
that Flaherty was to the Yanks like Damon was to the RedSox...

that being said, I don't think the Sox will miss Damon too much...

damon who???
i think once they get jeremy reed in here to man center for the sox, they will forget all about the over hyped damon.  i mean really, why would anyone pay him that much.  its really ridiculas that the yanks can just waste money the way they do.  damn i wish i was a yankee fan, i have to root for the freakin rangers and their 6 largest market and yet they spend like the pirates.

by TexasHeat on Dec 22, 2005 9:35 PM EST reply actions

You mean if...
they get Jeremy Reed.  I'd be very happy if the Sox did manage to trade for Reed.  He won't be as good as Damon this year, but I think over the life of the four-year contract he will certainly be close.  And for far less money.

While I was sad to see Damon leave, I do agree that the Yankees overpaid to get him, and I'm glad the Sox didn't try to match.  That said, I hardly blame New York for using their money advantage.  Boston certainly isn't shy about doing the same.

As a life-long Mariner fan...
let me point out that VERY FEW Mariners fans are interested in receiving Arroyo or Clement for Reed.  Lester or Papelbon, maybe...
Of course, we screamed email after email to the front office and they still signed Jurassic Carl!  :(

by kc @ Minor League Ball on Dec 23, 2005 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

He cannot be Jurassic Carl
Since he doesn't believe in dinosaurs.

He said in an interview
"Adam & Eve were the first things on earth, so dinosaurs never existed."

Good thing he plays baseball and is not a doctor, I would be teffified if an idiot like him was my Doc.

a new favorite player!

I like his comments about Adam and Eve... well, at least acknowledging them publicly...

not sure about the dinosaur part, but whatever.

yankee fan
It must be frustrating to be a Rangers fan, but I'd rather lose with a farm system than win by buying free agents. As a Red Sox fan, it was great to finally have the curse broken, but it would have been much sweeter if they had used a "player development machine" to do it. I respected the Yankee teams that won with a young Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Pettite and Posada. It's not the same when they're buying their stars.

Can you tell why I read this site?

by bolton on Dec 23, 2005 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

you don't understand the point of the post...
Flaherty was worth negative games to the Yankees.  By getting rid of him and having the Sox sign him, his negative games will be on the Sox now.  It's probably a 2-3 game swing because of a backup catcher's playing time, but it's still a couple of games.

by sabernar on Dec 23, 2005 12:03 AM EST reply actions

Hmmm
People ... you're all missing the big picture here.  The big question about this is of course, can Flaherty catch a damned knuckleball?
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

by KaoticKlown on Dec 23, 2005 2:48 AM EST reply actions

Maybe
This is a sign that Kelly Shoppach is going to be part of a trade for the much needed SS, CF, 1B that the Red Sox require.

Kelly plus Arroyo for Reed?
Youkilis plus Clement for Glaus (to play 1B)

Frees up dollars to sign Kevin Millwood.

Try Cora / Graffanino / Pedroia at SS.

by uksoxfan on Dec 23, 2005 4:49 AM EST up reply actions

Perhaps Not
Youkilis plus Clement for Glaus (to play 1B)

Oh, yes, certainly, the Sox need more aging injury-prone, low-average power hitters on the right side of the defensive spectrum.

Is there some reason that I'm not familiar with to assume that a Youkilis/Petagaine combo at 1b next year will suck sufficently to warrent giving up a very useful starting pitcher and Youkilis himself for Glaus?

What? .........
are you serious? Getting John Flaherty is revenge for Johnny Damon? It's awful funny that the Sox brass was stumbling around saying they'll miss him greatly along with nearly every sports columnist, radio show host, local legend Peter Gammons, the list goes on and on. Everyone said what a team leader. Plays fearlessly. Now, he sucks. Sounds like sour grapes to me. John Flaherty, on the other hand, is a back up catcher. When he's playing that means Varitek is not. What are you talking about? The Yanks didn't want Flaherty that's why you got him. Personally, I'm no Johnny Damon fan as I said in the past but this is just silly. As for the guy who said he doesn't respect The Yanks for buying their team. Ummm, you guys have nothing to talk about. Last I saw you had the second highest payroll. It's not my fault the Yanks will spend whatever it takes to win. You wouldn't be complaining if the Sox did the same! It's not YOUR money. Sox fans would be in heaven if you could land Tejada, Hunter, Ryan, Burnett, etc... Not one of you would be comlaining! You'd be saying we're gonna pound the Yanks now. Maybe, the players would be different but you get my point. Honestly, tell me I'm wrong. Tell me you really give a crap how much money the Sox spend if it meant a world championship.

and another thing........
I didn't read this part. "On arm-strength alone Flaherty puts Damon to shame!  End of discussion!" What the heck are you talking about? Did Flaherty convert to centerfield? End of discussion? If he's the starting center fielder all of "Yankee Nation" .. how funny.....will be rejoicing. Given the latest events I wouldn't be surprised. End of discussion. What a joke!

you have got to be kidding me.....
is the sarcasm detector impaired THAT much?

Signing Flaherty as revenge for Damon and the Red Sox come out ahead?

Tongue, meet cheek.

Oh, and by the way, those news stories in The Onion are fake too.

As for the actual signing, it is a non-guaranteed contract.  They can cut him in spring training and not lose a thing.  Assuming Shoppach isn't traded, the team will head to spring training with Shoppach, Huckaby, and Flaherty hashing it out for the backup position.

LMAO
>> "Oh, and by the way, those news stories in The Onion are fake too."

OMG, so funny. I don't have a clue how so many in this thread didn't get the sarcasm. Must be the blind Yankee/BoSox rage.

if it's sarcasm.........
that's fine. But, alot of folks who posted ahead of me didn't think so. See, that shows you how stupid it really is that you think it was tongue in cheek. Also, I see you stayed clear of the payroll discussion. Wisely so.

by the pinstripes on Dec 23, 2005 2:02 PM EST reply actions

wait a sec...
let me get this straight - I am stupid because there were other prior posters who also suffer from Impaired Sarcasm Detection (ISD for those who are unfamiliar with this tragic disorder)

Face it - you went on a smug rant based on a posting made in a tongue-in-cheek manner.  If you want to say that the fact previous posters also bought it mitigates things, that is fine.  But don't say it proves that i'm the stupid one.  My bout of ISD is in remission.

by LeftyTG on Dec 23, 2005 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

I never..........
called you stupid. Flaherty compared to Damon is stupid.

by the pinstripes on Dec 24, 2005 6:11 PM EST up reply actions

nice reasoning
"See, that shows you how stupid it really is that you think it was tongue in cheek."

this is the logical reasoning a 7 year old makes. essentially, i'm not stupid cuz you're stupid. montyburns better watch out for the ole' "i'm rubber you're glue" argument next.

by DavidWrightismyGod on Dec 23, 2005 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

How did you know??????
Who told you????  My greatest weakness, my achilles heel, is the dreaded "i'm rubber you're glue" argument.  I am helpless against its vicelike grip on reason.

Oh, and for the sarcastic impaired, the above was written in jest.  In no way do i actually dread the "i'm rubber you're glue" argument.  In fact, i find it rather humorous.
