Minnesota found their DH

Foxsports.com reports that the Minnesota Twins have come to terms with outfielder Rondell White, who becomes their much needed solution for a solid right-handed bat.

Star-divide

My thoughts,

Personally, I was looking forward to someone who'd look a bit better in the #4 spot, like Frank Thomas.  Having a healthy future Hall of Fame'er batting between Mauer and Morneau 500 times this season was the ideal situation, where he'd bring his power and patience to a lineup desperately needing it.  My next choice was perhaps Kevin Millar, a guy who despite putting up down numbers last year was still a guy who has shown decent power and at least has avoided making outs at a decent clip, or Piazza who is also headed for Cooperstown who might also see a career resurgence due to the comforts of not playing the field.

Rondel White was perhaps a fourth or fifth choice.  He has certainly hit well the last few seasons, but he's much more of a 'put the ball in play, hope it drops' type of guy that's consistent with Minnesota's theory of hitting.

At least this does seem to justify the loss of LeCroy, a guy who smashed lefties like the Hulk, but hasn't a place to play in the field.

LF Stewart
2b Castilla
C Mauer
DH White
1b Morneau
CF Hunter
RF Lew!/Cuddyer/Kubel
3b Batista/Cuddyer
SS Bartlett

this looks a little better than last year, so...

So, where does Piazza end up?
Angels still seem like best bet, but after that, no one in the AL jumps out at me.  Maybe Toronto, if they can trade one (or two) of their corner infielder/DH's.

Dare I say:  Dodgers?

Re: Piazza
I think he takes the DH slot from Kruk on Baseball Tonight... actually I have no idea where he ends up. Just glad Larry Bowa won't be on BBTN in 2006.

Why not DH Stewart
Stewart has the arm of a 2b man and the range of a slow moving tractor, so why not put him at DH and let White take over in LF.

The Twins have a lot of OF depth though, and I agree with the idea of Piazz, Thomas or Millar as the new guy not White, but I suspect Daddy Warbucks wasn't going to take anymore sheckels out of his petty cash drawer so this is what they got.

Not that I'm unhappy, but I think the others were better. I really think Millar will have a good year somewhere.

I won't get married until the Red Sox win the World Series. AGAIN!!

Stew
He had a Rate/Rate2 of 101/102 last year.  Ford has a career Rate of 98 in left, and Rondell's an injury hazard if you play him in the field.  Stewart is the best option, despite his noodley arm.

yeah
that's what I was thinking:  Isn't White a major injury risk?  The Twins can't expect him to play more than 120 games next year, and even that seems like a stretch.

Here're his five year figs...

  1. 94
  2. 95
  3. 126
  4. 137
  5. 121
  6. 97
...which is not a good track-record.

There is a reason...
that White referred to himself as Ron-DL in an interview in like 2002 or 2003. It was one of the funniest comments I read from a baseball player not named "Casey" in awhile. Since then I have followed him a little more closely.

Millar?
Millar? Decent Power? Not sure how adding his 9 HR's per year helps. If he could be counted on for 20-25 he would be o.k.

Look at his prior seasons.  Unless he's in a serious legitimate decline (and who among all MN's possible choices don't have that as a looming possibility for 2006), he looks like a 15-20 HR / .360+ ob% type of player while having a history of better health than anyone else on the list.

White
I wouldn't want White's knees running around on that Metrodome turf.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

White-good points
Good points about White.

I like Millar to have a nice bounce back year from a really sucky one last year.

Just a hunch. If he gets to a nice park.

Help me Rondell
I like the signing.  I reminds me of Chili Davis coming to town and helping the Twins win the World Series.

He is a much better player than Kevin Millar.  And he will be healthier than The Big Always Hurt.

I was having fun with the possibility of Piazza coming to the Twins.  But he is going back to LA of Anaheim.
