Ryan Madson to the rotation?...

Now that Vicente Padilla was dealt to Texas for a bag of marbles, it looks likely that Ryan Madson could move to the rotation this year...

Star-divide

What does everyone think his numbers would look like? He had success as a starter in the minors, he is 25 years old and pitched well in relief for the past two years. He broke down at the end of last season with a terrible September (overuse), but other than that, he was very good.

2006: 185 IP, 12 W, 3.90 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 160 K

Is that a reasonable projection? Does he have potential to be better? I am not expecting ace material, but I think he does have very appealing potential in the rotation...

He could be
but tends to get the ball up in the zone as he tires and it might take him a long time to get stretched out to be a starter to go deep into games.

My thoughts - 155 IP, 10 W, 4.15 ERA, 1.35.WHIP, 130 k's

K's
I think the K's might be a little overly optimistic. It's one thing to K guys when you pitch one or two innings. It's another thing to baffle them 3 times threw the lineup.

Maybe he can, but I'm cautious when I project. Sorta like my motto at the office "under promise, over deliver". Better to be happy when pleasantly surprised when someone over-delivers on rational expectations than pissed when they don't meet some aggressive expectations.

Great filler guy in fantasy leauges...
He's got the potential to be a good back-end fantasy starter next year, someone who will give you nice strikeout numbers, 10 wins, and won't kill your ERA and WHIP.  Think Javy Vazquez without the massive amount of innings pitched.

Madson starting...
I picked up Madson in a strat league after his brief 2003 MLB stint.  So, I watched him closely in 2004.  He was dominating as a middle reliever.  Then, I was psyched when they gave him a start.  In that one start, he did so poorly that it significantly affected his strat card for the following season.  He just looked terrible.  I have to assume that was some combination of tiny sample size, jitters, youth.  But the difference in his demeanor was striking.  He looks so poised and confident coming in from the pen... I thought for sure he was in line to be the next closer, and while I understand that SP are more valuable than RP, I really don't understand the Phils activities - moving Padilla out and moving Madson to SP (thus losing three top relievers this off-season).

On the K issue, I agree that SP don't try to whiff as many hitters.  But on the flip side, they also get to see the weak parts of the other team's lineup, whereas a RP is more likely to see a PH than a bad hitter.

I just don't see it.....
granted, I could be wrong but the fact that he wore down is very telling. There is a very distinct difference between a starter and a reliever. My gut feeling is he will be put back in the role that he's most valuable in..........middle relief!
