BA's Top 10 Rockies Prospects

Here's Baseball America's top 10 Rockies:

  1. Ian Stewart, 3b
  2. Troy Tulowitzki, ss
  3. Franklin Morales, lhp
  4. Chaz Roe, rhp
  5. Ubaldo Jimenez, rhp
  6. Shane Lindsay, rhp
  7. Chris Iannetta, c
  8. Juan Morillo, rhp
  9. Ryan Shealy, 1b
  10. Chris Nelson, ss

The big surprise to me is how low Chris Nelson is.  I know he was hurt and didn't play, but it seems unlike BA to drop his tools and age behind a 26 year old first baseman(Shealy) and a guy who throws a straight fastball and little else(Morillo).  I guess if I were making the list I'd move Shealy up to third, slot Nelson between Jimenez and Lindsay, and slide Ching-Lung Lo into the 10 spot ahead of Morillo, but as always there's a reason they get paid to do this sort of thing I suppose.

Agree about Nelson
To me, a season lost to injury doesn't move a guy with those tools down this far.

hmm
to me, it well might, but i'm nothing short of astonished that BA feels the same way. they were incredibly high on nelson a year ago.

nelson
I thought they overrated Nelson a year ago, ignoring his high strikeout rate in the hitter-friendly Pioneer League. I've never seen him play, so I can only go on stats, and that struck me as a red flag.

completely agree
i always thought that and i think his current ranking is much more in line with his pro performance so far

Shealy
I am a huge fan of this guy. I think he needs to be traded ASAP to give him a shot at playing though.

I doubt he makes it in RF but curious about others thoughts.

We may find out his numbers are Mile high inflated but He deserves a shot.

I also like ryan shealy. He has a really pure swing. I think he'll be a fine player if given the chance. I wish my cards could have gotten him from the rockies instead of bigbie.

biggest absentee....
....no Dexter Fowler?....hhhmmmm, what's not to like about a young 5-tool prospect who struggled a bit because he was just learning to switch-hit?

re:
I could see why Jayson Nix dropped out of the top 10, but it will be interesting to see where Jeff baker, Seth Smith, and Jeff Salazar end up. Baker and Smith showed poor k/bb ratios but Salazar got on base quite a bit, howver, he did whiff 100 plus.

lindsay
i think by the end of next year, colorado's #1 will undoubtedly be shane lindsay...he has such good stuff and IMO hes gonna blow up big time this year

and for the record, say goodbye to jayson nix cause from just watching his #'s this year (basically his k's) i don't think hes gonna get a whiff of this list again

re
I'm also surprised with how far Nelson has dropped. I guess this year we'll be able to tell where he stands for sure. If he puts up big numbers, than this season truly is an aberation due to injury. if he struggles again, then stick a fork in him.

Fowler has a lot to like as well. 6'5" with plenty of room to fillout and tons of projectability. He could either stay lean and lithe and become a Torii Hunter type, or he could put serious weight on and be filled out at 6'5", 240ish and be a slugger. The sky is the limit.
