New Sox GM

Take this with a grain of salt, as it's coming from the Boston Herald...

Star-divide

It appears the latest rumor regarding the Sox search for a GM is that they are going to name Jed Hoyer and Ben Cherington co-GM's.  If this turns out to be accurate, I'm going to be very, very happy.  And it will have the added bonus of killing off any chance that Jim Bowden could get his greasy hands on this team...

I've heard this kicked aroudn a bit, i hope the Herald did finally manager to get something right for a change since I like this decision.  But I'll want to see it published elsewhere before I get my hopes up too high.

I agree completely...
I've been hoping they'd go ahead and name one of the internal folks as GM (Byrnes would have been the best choice, but obviously he wasn't available).  But I think a Hoyer/Cherington team would work very well.  And it would signal that the Sox won't change the direction that they are headed in...

Rumor
The sox ownership are rumored to be considering bringing in Theo Epstein in an advisory capacity to assist Cherington and Hoyer.

I just saw that...
in the Globe.  I wonder 1) if it's true, and 2) how much sense that would make.  I mean, would Theo really give up the GM position only to come back as an advisor?  Then again, I suppose it could be sort of a back door maneuver for him to resume the role of GM, but there's a lot about the story that gives me pause.  Hope it happens though!  I'm sick of watching all our talented front office personnel depart for AZ...

Advisor
As an advisor, he would have far fewer responsibilities and wouldn't really answer to anyone. The GM tandem would go to him for opinions/advice/etc and he'd tell them what he thinks.  That may not be the full extent of the role, but that's what the term advisor seems to imply.

exactly
This is exactly what some reporters are speculating. Theo could be an adviser now and resume the GM role some time next year.

As a Sox fan
I think this is a great idea.  I have been pushing for either Hoyer or Cherington to get the job and a split if ine with me.  I think those guys are very qualified and hopefully they can keep the rest of the baseball operations staff in place.  Theo signing on as an advisor is a great idea, too.  I would much rather have him helping the Sox than being an advisor for the A's, Blue Jays, or any other team.  Hopefully this will mean Larry Luchinno will take the President's job with the new ownership in Washington and Theo can step in a President in Boston.  We can all only hope.
