Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Young Pitcher Question

Now that we are on the topic of young pitchers, I had a question. What do people think of Ervin Santana. Does any of you really think he could be an ace or do you think he wil settle into a number 3 or 4, possibly number 2 type pitcher. I know his numbers were quite pedestrian this year record was 12-8, 4.65 era, 99/47 k/bb. But the guy was all of 22 years old and he won some big games for the Angels down the stretch and in the playoffs. I would like your guys opinions.

I think his fellow Angel rotation mate seems like a pretty good comparison.  Sometimes absolutely dominant, sometimes not so much.  Not sure if its a concentration thing or what, but I doubt he'll ever be an ace.  Probably a really good number 3 would be my guess.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.

SWERVIN ERVIN !!
Since he's on my fantasy team I may a tad biased but I think he has loads of potential. His stuff is certainly there but his age definitely will factor in the short term. Honestly, I think his ceiling is more like a #2 starter. That ain't bad!

Ervin
Last season,I watched Ervin make some very experienced veteran hitters look like little leaguers with a few pitches. He clearly has ace potential. Hang onto him. Think ace or bust... and I doubt he's a bust. He's a smooth operator.

Santana
He is still developing, but I worry that the Angels rushed him.  Injuries may have forced their hand, but we have seen how this can damage a prospect (see Jackson, Edwin).

His jump to the majors saw his K/9 drop to 6.67, which is inadequate when combined with a 1.39 WHIP.  Also disturbing, Santana gave up 17 HR in 133.2 IP with a 0.78 G/F ratio.  Those flyball tendencies need to improve.

I think he has a good chance to succeed, but I would expect some growing pains over the next couple seasons.
