Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Nick Adenhart

What's this guys story?  I hadn't ever heard of him until the team of minor leaguers thread on Sunday when a couple of people listed him on their "teams" of top players in the minors.  I looked up his stats from this year and his K rate was excellent but his BB rate was poor and his H rate was ok but not great.  Plus it was in just 50 innings of work.  He was a 14th round draft pick in '04 out of HS.  On the surface he looks like a good guy to keep an eye on but not a can't miss prospect.  What don't I know that would make someone would consider him one of the top prospects in the game?

Adenhart
Well, in his Senior year of High School, he was said to be the best pitching prospect available for the 2004 draft, even in front of Homer Bailey. He had a serious arm injury, and had to get Tommy John Surgery (I believe), and that is why he dropped so low. Overall, he looks like a very good prospect who can be an ace for years to come for the Angels.

More on Adenhart
As mentioned above, he was a top-rated guy who blew out his arm during his senior season of HS. The Angels took a flyer on him in the 14th round and offered him $710,000 to sign on and rehab under them. They took it easy with him last year for obvious reasons.

The Angels won't know exactly what they have in Adenhart until next season, when he should have fully recovered, but initial signs are very promising.

Adenhart
would have gone to North Carolina with Andrew Miller if he didn't sign his contract.  Reportedly it had a bit to do with the fact that Dr. Lewis Yocum (Angels team Dr.) would be incharge of his rehab.

Thanks guys
Looking forward to see if he improves his command this year.  Where does he start the season?  Cedar Rapids, Rancho?

Cedar Rapids
Low A would be most likely, especially given the hostile environment to pitchers in Rancho.

I was looking through the earlier thread and I have to admit, I was surprised that people were plugging him into their all-prospect rotations. He's interesting, but I'd really love at least SOME full-season data on him. And I say this knowing that my own list (unposted) would almost certainly include Homer Bailey.

I agree
I think you will see Adenhart and Thomas Mendoza begin the season with the Kernals but I would bet that both of them end up with the Quakes next season.
