Suspected steroid use

Now it looks like Miguel Tejada is providing B12 shots to teammates, but look what happens to Palmeiro with one of those shots that he buys legally in his hometown. I am personally suspicious of him bucause a guy 5'9" is not suposse to be hitting those long balls that frequently. Any other players you suspect?

Palmeiro....
is an ass. He got busted and he tried to throw Tejada under the bus by saying the B12 shot was what caused his positive test. Granted Tejada isn't very smart for giving it to Raffy in the first place so hopefully he learned something.

Also with your flawed logic anyone under 5'9" who hits a few homers is a steroid user? Kind of a stupid assumption. If you would look at Tejadas stats his season high is only 34. If he was hitting 40-60 per season then I would think something was fishy.

Tejada is a great player, I doubt he uses roids.

Come now
Does random speculation get us anywhere? It will only serve to sully the reputation of decent men.

Small guys can be built
Another point is that just because you're small in height, doesn't mean you can't be built like a bull.

The most common example of this is NFL running backs. Many of them are 5'10 to 6' and go between 200 and 225. Using the top two RBs as examples - LT is 5'10 at 221; S Alexander is 5'11 225.

A little history
Jim Wynn and Joe Morgan were short players who had home run power. Tejada has the advantage of playing in a band box while Wynn played most of his career in parks that played to opposite extreme.

Don Mattingly and Bobby Murcer had the right field porch at Yankee Stadium to aim at, but Mattingly in particular seemed to have little problem putting it out of any park. Both weren't big guys...probably smaller than their stats reported.

Wade Boggs was a big guy who didn't hit for power...even in Yankee Stadium.

Henry Aaron wasn't huge, but had great wrists.

neither
Camden Yards nor the Oakland Coliseum are band boxes.  Camden's more or less neutral, and Oakland's a pitchers' park.  Tejada has legitimate power.

We're on to "height" now?
Come on now...this is getting absurd.  So, shall we go back in history and look at the height of players like Hack Wilson, Kirby Puckett, or Willie Mays?  If we're going to do it for today's players, well, we better do it for the "heroes" of baseball.  I'll ensure you now that players (and average people outside of baseball) are taller than 100 years ago.  This brings me back to a question that I like to raise:  Explain to me how it's somehow possible that players 50 to 100 years ago could set all of these records and that they couldn't possibly be broken at some later date?

Rafael Furcal MUST be on steroids because his arm is too good for a short guy; Scott Kazmir MUST be on steroids because he throws too hard for a short guy.  Are you kidding with this post or are you really serious?

perhaps i'm totally off but...

Huh?
No worries, but I'm from the West Coast.  Nice name, by the way.  And no, I'm not on steroids.

ahh, mistaken ID
i went to school with a kid named kieran darcy. he actually writes for espn.com now (somewhat poorly, but whatever). anyway, i figured i'd take a chance and ask. and are yuo sure you're not on roids? are you over 6 foot?

by DavidWrightismyGod on Nov 14, 2005 2:11 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

good stuff...
...Sorry, no 'roids here, just lots of running.  By the way, do you have any news on the Mets and their new stadium?

by kmdarcy on Nov 14, 2005 2:13 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

aside from the mets chasing
every possible FA there isn't anything solid. it looks like omar is gonna jump in on the bidding for javy vazquez, supposedly they are tight from montreal days. also they debate in NY right now seems to be over wagner or bj ryan at closer and who exactly is gonna catch, molina, hernandez or darkhorse jojima from japan.

from what i understand the stadium is proceeding on target for 2009. the official word on funding, i.e. how much would city/state throw in and what type of perks, have yet to be announced. i'm thinking that any sort of public financing will not be forthcoming. so, probably looking at a site in queens next to shea, the current parking lot most likely. and some type of concessions from the city regarding taxes and maybe a pledge to spruce up the 'hood a bit. and the mets will be footing the bill for the actual stadium. which honestly is how i think it should be. i don't think teams should get public funding for stadiums. all the studies seem to show that the financial impact on the neighborhoods and cities is negligible and not at all in line with what the teams promise the city the benefits will be.

Yeah...
...I've been in a couple of debates at certain Mets blogs.  Count me in on the Ryan camp.  I don't think that a ton of money has to be spent to make the bullpen good.  I don't think that they have to change that much to win the NL East and I'd rather see Piazza come back than throw a ton of money at Hernandez or Molina (please not him).  I think that the corner has been turned; David Wright is a baseball God.  Short version of my answers...

by kmdarcy on Nov 14, 2005 9:44 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Ryan?
Do you really think Ryan will be that much less than Wagner? You're talking an 8 million vs 10 million difference.

I agree that they shouldn't hand out big contracts to Hernandez or Molina. I'm personally in the Jojima camp, myself. I doubt he will be that much less than the other two.

Piazza, for as much as I love him, cannot come back to the Mets in a part time roll. It's better off he leaves while he is still, somewhat, good. It will just be a very frustrating situation for all involved should he come back (see Posada, Jorge).

Funny
"I don't think that they have to change that much to win the NL East"
How long have teams been saying that?  at least there's one thing you can count in your favorite.  No more Mazzone.  That might be the biggest edge possible.

by CrimsonLiederhosen on Nov 15, 2005 12:35 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I wouldn't get too worked up over this string
the fact that the assertion was backed solely on height says it all. Also, the argument is written as if it were a certainty instead of something to debate.

So...the Mets are going to trade for Albert Pujols. What other players are they going to get? (jk)

re
From good friends and family that play/played pro ball. "70% of ball players use/have used in the past." You can draw your own conclusions to who. For anyone that has lifted weights and been around people who have juiced before, its not that difficult to spot many of the abusers.

by ScottAZ on Nov 14, 2005 1:27 AM EST   0 recs

tell your friend to...
...prove it.   Such accusations are absurd.  By the way, WHAT are steroids to you?  Weight room looks?  Okay, let's go with that.  Do you think that 15 or so players on every roster take or have taken steroids (however you define them)?  Please.

by kmdarcy on Nov 14, 2005 6:31 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

re
I don't have to prove anything, because I could care less what a peon like you thinks. My college roomate played major league baseball and has personally told me of stories of buying and injecting steroids while playing winter ball with other established MLBers. My cousin played in the minors for nearly a decade with a few cups of coffee in the bigs and has told me numerous stories of steroid and drug use of players that are household names.

My friends that have told me these things didn't do it to make a big deal of it, or to make a buck or a name for themselves. In fact, I was told while hanging out, camping, fishing, hunting, etc when it was just the two of us.

If you would like for me to look up the complete list of anabolic steroids for you, I will. The steroids I have heard used most were forms of Deca, Winstrol, and Sostanon. Obviously as someone that knows nothing of this, these names are meaningless to you.

by ScottAZ on Nov 14, 2005 1:14 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Wow...
...excellent retort.  I'm on steroids too.

by kmdarcy on Nov 14, 2005 1:28 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Height
Of course somebody would have to bring this up.  Short people (really, people of average height) aren't allowed to succeed in sports!

by Tcs5384 on Nov 14, 2005 1:48 AM EST   0 recs

The Final Solution
Clearly the only way to be sure that no baseball players are using steroids is to fire them all, and start the majors leagues over from scratch only with players willing to pee into a cup after every game.
Go ahead and shoot your mouth off, like it might kill the silence.

by ESiegrist on Nov 14, 2005 8:20 AM EST   0 recs

Guys I suspect
I think Willie Mays, Harmon Killebrew, Mel Ott, and Mickey Mantle were on 'roids.

I mean, how can you hit so many home runs and not even stand six feet tall?

by Sulla on Nov 14, 2005 9:03 AM EST   0 recs

this is
the most unproductive diary i've ever seen on here. You shouldn't just accuse people as if you are picking names out of a hat. This is pointless..

by ohad on Nov 14, 2005 10:31 AM EST   0 recs

Eddie Gaedel
Eddie Gaedel had to be on roids.  I mean he was what, 3'7" and he made it to the bigs.  No question in my mind.  There's all the proof I need.
