King Felix's brother is Compensation to Braves

for Leo Mazzone.
ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves on Friday acquired right-handed pitcher Moises Hernandez from the Baltimore Orioles as compensation for Baltimore signing Mazzone. Hernandez, 21, appeared in 11 games at Class A Aberdeen in 2005. He was 0-4 with a 3.08 ERA.

Small sample size, but not bad
Here are his numbers, see for yourself.  Has control issues it looks like, but averaged more than a strikeout an inning and only allowed 43 hits in 52 innings.

possible comp
Ok, its obviously not a serious or well thought out comp, but maybe he's the Ramon to Felix's Pedro

Interesting
Might be valid as a talent issue, but when Pedro came up, Ramon was the stud and pedro was seen as "Ramon's Brother".

Braves in Venezuela
Funny, I just read a BA article this afternoon about how the Braves originally courted King Felix--along with the Yanks & M's--but lost out (obviously).  Scouts from Atlanta have a relationship with the Hernandez family in Venezuela:  Maybe they think Moises can be useful, or maybe they're using this as leverage for the next big Venezuela offering...

Or
Maybe they're giving Moises a shot in the hopes that he can later recruit his brother to the great Braves organization. Free agency is 6 years away but if they make a really positive impression on Moises he may share that impression with his brother when the time comes.

Interesting
I hadn't heard much of him as a prospect, but his peripherals are all very good, except for his walks (which still aren't horrible, considering he's 21).

You also have to figure that at 6'1'', 170 lbs, he's going to fill out a little more and perhaps add a little more to his fastball.  To me, this looks like a nice project for the Braves - if he cuts down on his BB's and starts throwing hard, he's a steal.  If not, well, you did get him as compensation for a geriatric pitching coach (not to disrespect Leo).

why...

I don't understand coaches contracts at all, but why did the Orioles owe the Braves any compensation?  Wasn't Mazzone's contract up this Nov 15th?

Yankees...
I guess since the Yankees also asked for permission they figured they could lose him if they didn't start talking. Other than that the Braves made no attempt to keep him, so I would assume that's it.
